Mothers Against Drunk Driving

The life of Michelle Ramsey Hawkins changed drastically due to a drunk driver. Michelle, a mother of three children, had crashed on a trash compacter dropped by a driver with previous DUI convictions. She followed the traffic rules and parked the car by the roadside while calling for the authorities. They even created safety triangles to divert traffic. As they were waiting for the authorities to get to the scene, another drunk driver crashed through the safety triangle in his SUV, and when she came to, she could hear the cries of her daughter, and that was enough to tell her that she had lost her two sons (MADD Media, 2021). A perfectly happy family had two family members at the same time due to drunk driving. One drunk driver changed the lives of four people completely, causing deep emotional and physical scars. Michelle’s case is one among many more cases where mothers have lost their children to preventable accidents caused by drunk drivers.

Driving under the influence of alcohol causes impaired judgment, leading to mortality and morbidity. One of the worst nightmares of any mother is losing their child or having their child impaired for the rest of their life due to a drunk driver. According to the NHTSA, about 28 people in the US die in drunk driving crashes. That is one person in every 52 minutes, meaning one mother loses a child after every 52 minutes to drunk driving in the US (Editorial Staff, 2020). This is a disheartening state of affairs as these are deaths that could have been prevented had the driver been sober. Alcohol reduces the function of the brain, impairs thinking and affects muscle coordination. This causes the drunk drivers to swerve and hit another car or over speed and run over a child crossing the road. Mothers against drunk driving is a non-profit organization in the US, Canada and Brazil that seeks to stop drunk driving and support victims of drunk driving.

MADD is an organization that was started in 1980 by a mother who did not want to keep silent anymore. She was tired of mothers losing their children losing their children and thus, she started the organization that advocates for safe driving and supports victims of drunk driving. The organization has grown from 1980 to date, supported by hundreds and thousands of people who are passionate and advocate for zero deaths caused by drunk driving. The organization focuses on zero deaths, zero injuries and zero families impacted by impaired driving. Since 1980, the organization has helped to cut the number of drunk driving deaths in half and saved 350,00 lives (Editorial Staff, 2020). It has also helped more than 850,00victims of drunk driving. The organization has also expanded throughout the US and outside the US.

Organizations such as MADD require to get the attention of all people and governments. The organization is fighting against mortality and morbidity caused by drunk drivers. The accidents caused by drunk drivers leave injuries physical and emotional. There are people who will never walk or talk because they were involved in an accident with a drunk driver. More action needs to be taken to ensure that mothers are not losing their children in accidents caused by impaired drivers. More stringent action should be taken against drivers caught driving under the influence. Victims of accidents caused by drunk drivers need to come out and testify so that those drunk drivers will not have the chance to cause the pain they caused them to another family.
