How Can Leadership Create a Well Managed HCO

Introduction

The meaning of a well-managed healthcare organization can be interpreted in a number of ways. In general, a well-managed healthcare organization is an organization that is able to deliver high quality care to its patients while also being financially responsible. This means that the organization has put into place systems and processes that allow it to operate effectively and efficiently (White and Griffith, 2010). There are a number of factors that contribute to the overall management of a healthcare organization. One of the most important is leadership. Leaders play a vital role in setting the tone and direction for an organization. They are responsible for creating an environment that is conducive to success. This paper will focus on how leadership can create a well-managed health care organization.

A well-managed healthcare organization are those that delight their caregivers, families, patients and other associates that offer care that is effective, safe, efficient, patient centered, equitable and timely (White and Griffith, 2010). To achieve an excellent health care organization, there is need to build a culture around their vision, mission and values. The healthcare leaders encourage and empower their associates to meet the client and patients’ needs. In order to create a well-managed healthcare organization, leaders need to focus on a few key areas which include building a transformational culture, development of a physician supply plan, creating a communicating culture, promoting shared values, empowering associates, listening responsively to meet their needs, support service excellence, reward and celebrate success.

Transformational culture attracts the support and respect of stakeholders to sustain an environment where all the associates are motivated and encouraged to meet the needs of patients. In a well-managed healthcare organization, leaders promote shared values through displaying their mission prominently and repeatedly. The Chief Executive Officer or senior managers meet all the associates to explain the values and mission and the ways through which the healthcare organization expresses its commitment to the values and mission. Leaders empower associates to understand how they can and should alter the work environment. Empowerment enables all associates even in the least skilled positions to be committed to their professional role of an agent for the patient care (Rouse and Serban, 2014). The leaders reinforce empowerment through encouraging, listening, explaining, reassuring, and responding. Therefore, leaders create a culture where questions can be answered, asked, sought and solved.

Listening responsively to meet the needs of the clients and associates has played a great role in creating a well-managed healthcare organization. Listening ensures that all the associates will be understood, heard and received in a constructive manner (White and Griffith, 2010). Listening is what makes communication effective and an important factor in associate satisfaction. Leaders create one to one conversations, rounding where they meet employees in their units, informal meetings with employee units and town-hall meetings.

Leaders create a well-managed healthcare organization through supporting service excellence. The moral base of service excellence is to serve others just as one wishes to receive appropriate service. Service excellence lets the clients have a positive perspective regarding how well they are understood and valued (White and Griffith, 2010). The ability of the leaders to manage service excellence keeps the clients returning and attracting new clients due to a favorable reputation. Leaders work to remove conflicts and frustrations that associates face. Leaders negotiate with associates to find the most suitable solution. Through identifying potential team members and supporting them, the leaders demonstrate transformational potentials. Additionally, leaders measure patient satisfaction and build major service elements into the strategic plan. Effective healthcare leaders set clear expectations and put in place techniques that measure whether the expectations are met. The leaders also transform not only the physical environment but also the beliefs and practices of the physicians and nurses thus improving the service excellence.

On daily basis, all leaders have to encourage, reward and celebrate the success of associate. To create a well-managed healthcare organization they have to recognize and celebrate particularly the positive role models in implementation of the healthcare organization values. The most common form of celebration is encouragement and recognition. Celebrating achievement in the right manner has the probability of increasing motivation and confidence as well as leading to a happier and more productive team. Associates feel appreciated when they are recognized for their achievements and hard work (Rouse and Serban, 2014). Recognition plays an essential role in employee satisfaction, improving morale, making the healthcare organization a much happier workplace and strengthening teamwork.

The healthcare manager has to maintain management capability which entails establishing and supporting an effective team. For instance, the CEO chooses and ensures that accountability of all the associates, represents the board externally and internally and coordinates the design and operation of the healthcare organization. The leaders have to ensure that the organization has adequate resources (Harrison and Thompson, 2014). This includes both financial and human resources. Additionally, they need to put into place systems and processes that will allow the organization to operate effectively and efficiently.

Conclusion

In summation, leadership in a well-managed healthcare organization focuses on ensuring that the functions are carried out to sustain high performance. There are a number of ways that leaders can create a well-managed healthcare organization. These include empowering associates, creating a culture around their vision, mission and values, rewarding success, measuring performance, focusing on customer needs and supporting service excellence. Leaders create a culture of excellence within the organization when all of these factors are in place. This creates an environment where the organization can thrive. Leaders who are able to create such an environment are more likely to be successful in their efforts to manage a healthcare organization.
