Investigating Green Supply Chain Management Practices and Performance

Authors Purpose

Green supply management is integrating sustainable environmental processes into the traditional supply chain. This involves processes such as manufacturing and production, product design, material sourcing, operation, and end of life management. According to Cousins et al. (2019), firms have been increasing their efforts in addressing environmental issues in their supply chains. The concern with environmental issues in the supply chain has had positive effects on both the environment and the cost performance in organizations, thus realizing the full potential of GSCM. However, some studies show companies have a challenging time realizing the full potential of GSCM. The study by Cousins et al. (2019) focuses on two moderators to a sustainable supply chain management context, eccentricity, and supply chain traceability. The purpose of the articles is to review these two concepts and how they can be applied to green supply chain management and how they can influence their effectiveness.

Application to Supply Chain Management

Traceability in the supply chain refers to the ability to track and trace elements of a product as they move along the supply chain from raw material to the finished product. The application of green supply chain management is applicable in the supply chain in that going green helps companies achieve their environmental sustainability goals and also reduces costs. This is because most organizations reconceptualize who is in the supply chain (Cousins et al., 2019). This involves leveraging the external skills and external skills and expertise while looking out for the environment’s well-being. Firms are often influenced by the environmentally-focused external stakeholders, and thus instead of viewing these regulatory bodies as adversaries, organizations can involve them in their supply chain and thus helping them abide by their terms and reducing the amount of money that could have been spent on fines for not following the environmental sustainability rules (Cankaya & Sezen, 2018). Involving external stakeholders helps the organization understand better and cleaner transportation methods and ecological packaging, and it can also give the organization a better understanding of green product purchasing and the environmental criteria for selecting suppliers.

Background of the Issue

Green supply chain management is an issue that has recently come to life as people are taking notice of the environmental changes and the effects companies have on the environment. Most companies are faced with challenges in achieving their corporate social responsibility, especially in terms of caring for the environment. Green supply chain practices include the incorporation of sustainability concepts into traditional supply chain management (Liberty University Custom, 2020). The goal of GSCM is to reduce the amount of carbon emission and minimize waste while maximizing profits. All the areas of the supply chain have room for going green and reducing the amount of greenhouse gases produced (Khan & Qianli, 2017). The environment has been suffering from the impact of industrialization since the beginning of industrialization. Therefore, it is essential for companies to take up some of the responsibilities and take up the changes. According to Genesis chapter 1, after God was done with the creation, he gave man the responsibility to care for all the animals and the environment. Taking up GSCM for companies is one way of honoring God’s command. It is also a good way for companies to make profits while protecting the environment.

Managerial Implications

Managers should realize that it is their responsibility to care for the environment. According to the study by Cousins et al. (2019), GSCM in companies increases the benefits for the environment and lowers the organization’s costs. This is an indication that they have nothing to lose by embracing green supply chain management. The study concluded that manufacturing organizations’ ecocentricityand supply chain traceability are associated with cost improvements and environmental performance.

From the findings in the study, there is a positive relationship between GSCM and operating cost improvement. This is one of the factors that managers should consider. This is a solid place to start when pitching for the introduction of GSCM to senior managers in the organization (Khan & Qianli, 2017). There is also evidence that GSCM impacts financial and market-related performance, and thus the adoption of GSCM in any organization will help it improve its position in marketing. Apart from maximizing its profits, the company will also be playing its part in ensuring that the environment is safe and that the activities in the organization are contributing to a healthier environment.

Summary

Green supply chain management is associated with environmental and operational cost improvement. Many firms are, however, skeptical about capturing value from sustainability. Most firms fear that they will lose money if they go green. However, the opposite has been discovered in the study. Embracing green supply management helps companies make more money. It is, therefore, the role of managers to ensure that their organizations are embracing GSCM. They could start small and then expand within the organization. Some organizations might not be open to this idea. However, once they see the implications GSCM has on their operation costs, and how it boosts their position in the market, they will eventually embrace it. Companies need to embrace the new way of doing things to keep the environment clean.
