Attachment and Temperament: Both in One Child
In your experience with children (both your own and/or others) how do you think their individual attributes and temperamental styles interact with the ways their parents treat them to determine the attachment characteristics and styles they develop?
How does their nature and temperamental predisposition affect the way people treat them and vice-versa?
Give one example of a child and show how, for this child, attachment and temperament interact.
Please post a response, and respond thoughtfully to at least one other person’s posting.
General Discussion Instructions
Your total response should be at least 250 words. Your explanations should be complete, clear, concise and thorough, and supported by cited information from a class learning resource, and follow APA style with your in-text citation and reference.
Show evidence of thoroughly reading and listening to the course resources. This is preferable to outside research. But if you provide additional resources, they will be graded on their scholarly credibility; that means sources of questionable truth may result in a lower grade on the post and sources of good credibility may result in a higher grade.
ANSWER
Human Development M3.2
The temperament of a child determines how the child is treated by the caregiver. When parents have a difficult child they feel less efficient in their parental role, and thus, this might lead to the parent taking more punitive parenting styles with the child. Parents with two or more children tend to say that one child is more difficult than the others, and this affects how they are brought up (Lally &Valentine-French, 2019). The difference in how the children are raised could bring an issue, especially attachment issues. For example, if one child is easy and the other is difficult, the parents are likely to be friendlier to eth easy child and less drawn to the difficult one and as they grow older this might lead to the children feeling like they are not loved equally.
The temperamental predisposition affects how the child is treated by others. An easy child is likely to receive attention and the parents or the caregiver might be easier on them. The difficult child might receive punitive responses. A mother with a difficult child has a harder time balancing her life and might sometimes end up getting frustrated and direct the frustration to the child. They might also decide to ignore the difficult child which might create unhealthy attachment issues where they develop an insecure disorganized attachment style or the insecure-avoidant style (Hart, 2018). I have come across a case where a difficult child ends up being insecure-avoidant style because as an infant the baby cried a lot and was responsive. This led to the parents hiring too many nannies as most would quit. This made the child develop the avoidant style where they do not show any need for the parents. They are more independent and even when the mother has been out for long they do not come to them running or show any emotion.
