Professional Identity of the Nurse: Putting it All Together

The professional identity of the nurse in nursing is defined by their sense of self and in relationships with others which are influenced by the norms and values of the nursing discipline. These values and norms lead to individual thinking, acting, and feeling like a nurse. The professional identity of a nurse begins from when they get into nursing throughout their education till they become certified nurses. Establishing one’s professional identity as a nurse is mostly all about having the confidence and the ability to work collaboratively with others to improve both the workplace and patient outcomes (Goodyear, 2021). Nurse managers are responsible for ensuring that new nurses form their identity. Identity development is dependent on the opportunities the nurse is accorded. It is also dependent on the coaching and mentoring that nurses need.

Caring in Nursing

I believe that as a nurse, I have a responsibility to my patients as well as my community. From the day I realized that I wanted to be a nurse, I have believed that the health of my patients is my responsibility despite their race, sexual orientation, age, or ethnicity. I have a duty to my patients and to ensure they receive the best quality of care as long as I hold the title of a nurse (Goodyear, 2021). As a nurse, one needs to be aware of the inner ethical values and the common understanding of nursing and caring (Karlsson & Pennbrant, 2020). As a nurse, it is essential to be attentive to the needs of the patient and open to the patient while also remaining respectful. A patient should be treated with humanity as this enhances the experience of both the patient and the nurse. A nurse can do this by using self-reflection to create awareness of nursing caring and the inner ethical values involved in caring.

Professional Identity

As a nurse, I have had various experiences in nursing and caring. I believe that as a professional, I am tasked with making the best out of the work environment to ensure I deliver the best quality of care. From my experience, I have worked in hospital environments that did not have resources or the resources that the patient needed (Pullen, 2021). However, I ensured that I acted as a professional despite not having the resources and gave the patient quality treatment. The patient outcomes are sometimes not dependent on resources; they are dependent on how the patient is treated. I believe in giving the best quality of care with whatever resources that are provided. I also believe in treating my patients fairly and the same. I intend to work towards ensuring all patients receive quality care, especially those who come to the emergency room without medical coverage and those who seek free medical services.

Professional Organizations

I plan on involving myself with an organization such as the American Nurses Association. I plan on concentrating on advocating for my patients; thus, ANA will be my starting point. The ANA will help me advance my practice as they are more involved in promoting the rights of nurses, especially in the workplace. If my rights are protected, I can deliver quality care better. I also plan on joining the international council on nurses. I am passionate about providing quality nursing, and I believe that should be possible. Internationally.

Conclusion

It will take a lot of time and coaching, but I believe my professional identity has been created. I believe that my values will lead me to become a caring and quality nurse. My nursing career will focus on advocating for my patients’ rights and ensuring that I provide quality care.
