Introduction
Cross cultural research entails the comparison of cultural trait across a number of societies. Cross-cultural research relies on research designs that compare different human behaviors across many cultures. The goal of cross-cultural research is to help understand the complexity of daily life, habits and beliefs that have been socially patterned with meaning and values (Meuleman, 2012). Therefore, this paper will analyze a cross cultural research article, summarize the research design, findings of the research and applicability of the research. The cross-cultural research will help in developing community initiatives that support increased inclusion and diversity in communities.
The Value of Cross-cultural Research
Cross-cultural research is a vital tool for understanding how different cultures interact with each other. Cross cultural research is also a vital tool that offers a range of tools of analyzing how cultural practices and meanings are circulated, produced and exchanged (Momir et al., 2015). Relatively, cross-cultural research offers knowledge regarding experiences and developmental process in varying cultures around the world. For instance, cross cultural researchers also offer findings about the immigrant and minority groups and about the interactions of varying cultural groups. Through cross cultural research, people gaining acceptance and interpretation of cultural variations through a larger framework of understanding. Comparing two individuals from two separate cultures helps understand different cultures and the psychology behind how people live. The results of a cross-cultural research help define the differentiating characteristics in the way people live (Van de Vijver and Leung, 2021).
As the number of global students continue to grow in American every year, it becomes vital to comprehend the social media behaviors of both the global students and the American students (Zhou, Frey and Bang, 2011). Better understanding of their habits through a cross cultural research can helper in better resource management which can allow academic facilitation in the institutions. The cross-cultural research article by Xu and Mocarski (2014) was a survey of the Chinese and the American students at the State University in the Southern U.S to measure the variance in social media attitudes and use. The study investigated the motivation and perception of social media engagement and the link amid the student social media participation and cultural values. The study focused on the implications of the student’s social media participation to a global community. The cross cultural research contributed to the study of the differences between the domestic and international student’s social media patterns where culture is temporal and dynamic
Summary of the Research Design.
Considerably, the aim of the cross-cultural research was to examine the drive and perception of students’ social media use and examine the connection between social media participation and cultural values. The study relied on an online survey that included 276 Chinese and American students (Xu and Mocarski, 2014). The survey comprised of four parts which included questionnaires asking for demographics, the attitudes towards perceptions and motivations, the five cultural dimensions and the psychological values of the participants.
Summary of the Findings from the Research
The research findings indicated that the American students are more active in using social media for their academic activities as compared to the Chinese. The Chinese had a more active interaction with the librarians and using the university library website. The American students had recurrent engagement with family, close relative, peers, and friends while the Chinese students were more interactive to strangers. The American students posted more individual relationship information on the social media as compared to the Chinese students (Xu and Mocarski, 2014). The American students had more positive attitudes towards social media use and more likely perceived social media as a beneficial and important too in the provision of useful information and convenient in interactive communication compared to the Chinese students.
The Chinese and America students shown a great variation in three cultural value including long term orientation, collectivism and power distance. The American students had a long term orientation and were more collective while the Chinese students has a short tern orientation and were more individualistic. There was no significant variation in uncertainty avoidance and masculinity values between the Chinese and American students. There were substantial variances in the individual level cultural values among two groups. The America participants acted and thought more self-sufficiently and were more probable to enhance and preserve their welfare (Xu and Mocarski, 2014). The Chinese were more expected to accept and respect the customary ideas and customs. The Chinese also restrained their actions and prevent violation of norms and social expectations. However, there was no great different between the security, achievement, universalism and hedonism values of the Chinese and American students.
Conclusion
The study revealed significance variance in the students’ social media usage based on their origin and cultural values. The social media participation of the students reflected the group level cultural values. Additionally, the social media usage patterns had a great correlation with the individual level cultural values of the students.
Applicability of the Research
The research conducted a cross cultural study which evaluated the behaviors of individuals on the basis of their culture and norms. The findings of the research have shown how the social media needs of the Chinese students and the American students varied as a result of the stereotypical cultural norms. Each student has their unique needs which lead to the variation in social media usage. This research shows the need for interventions to develop equality and inclusion for the needs of the domestic and international students.
The research adequately covered the Chinese and American students with the findings being tailored based on the needs assessment of each group. The two groups were equally represented in the research in the measure of individual cultural values. The study has accounted for the need of a multifaceted and dynamic nature of culture.
