He said I can pick any topic to write about so write about the short story “a raisin in the sun” by Lorraine Hansberry’s. Below is an example of what the paper should like and then the outline and research is needed. I will attach the story below too. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO READ THE WHOLE THING and you dont need to do it the best you can. An 80% is acceptable or even a 75% worthy paper, it is a late paper and my class ends tomorrow so I need it ASAP
ANSWER
Racism in A Raisin in The Sun
Racism is considered the oppression and marginalization of people of colour based on a structured social hierarchy that offers a group of individuals’ privilege (Rowden, 181). The deep ethnic and racial inequities in the United States have resulted in racism that privileges white people. Ideally, racism has been a great issue that has influenced the United States. Throughout the state’s past, the promises of American fairness, freedom, chance and success have been chiefly set aside for the white society with a deliberate segregation of the ethnic groups. As suggested in “A Raisin in the Sun”, racism exerts a negative impact on self-concepts and achievement of American dreams among ethnic groups but can be prevented through intercultural exchanges and encounters and promoting and diversity.
A Raisin in the Sun focuses on the impacts of racism in the life of a younger poor black family that lives on the South Side of Chicago (Chae, 49). The play has demonstrated the family suffering from social discrimination in living space, housing, and employment. Chicago south side, like other low-level towns, suffered continuous discrimination and racism during the Great depression. Racism is evident in the Youngers, a family that portrays the life of an African American family in a low-level town which leads to conflict. Considerably, since equality is not common among races in the United States, the family struggles with hardships since they are coloured people. The play begins with a picture of a family in a low-class estate. Their living room could be well-ordered and comfortable were not for the contradictions they encounter in their state of being (Dafalla). The family live degraded social life due to their race and are less respected than the white race. Additionally, the family is not applicable for a job due to their race.
The social construction of race is seen through Lee Walter and Younger. Walter is poor, although he is consistently trying to do everything to meet the needs of Travis. Walter Lee is seen speaking to Travis Younger, “in fact, here are another fifty cents…buy yourself some fruit today…. or take a taxicab to school….” (Hansberry, 31). Walter Lee can only afford the job of chauffeur thus does not make enough money. Ideally, it was difficult for black individuals to acquire decent jobs during this era despite having a good education and being qualified. Therefore, black people have to work more to sustain the needs of their families.
Their effort to challenge racism takes the form of purchasing a house in a neighbourhood dominated by whites. The family struggles to get equal rights as the white people while fighting racism in the United States. For instance, Mrs Johnsons asked Lena and Ruth, “have you read about them… coloured people that were bombed out of their place ….” (Hansberry, 100). Mrs Johnsons was warning Ruth and Lena that the community they intended to move in was not a welcoming community for the coloured people. Considerably, racism and white domination in the United States are linked to the belief that their abilities, culture define superior and inferior groups and value and are linked to physical characteristics such as skin colour (Chae, 49). The blacks, such as Lena Younger, are considered inferior due to their colour, which has systematically been used to subordinate the black individuals due to their perspectives and colour.
Lena Younger family chose to live in the white community, which leads to several conflicts occurring between the white neighbourhood and the family. The white neighbourhood rejects the presence of the family in the area. The Clybourne Park Improvements Association attempts to give the family money to leave their new house. However, Lena and the family deny the offer and keep moving into the new house in the white neighbourhood. While in the house, they encounter daily assaults from racists who hurled bottles and bricks through their windows. The family is regarded as useless, dirty, disgusting and poor. However, most family members have dreams of wanting to buy a big house to prove to the racists that they have something of value in their lives.
The struggle of black people has been acknowledged in the United States. Most of the black individuals have found themselves unsatisfied with the lives they are living. The play shows that Lena had a dream but was affected by social constructions that did not allow her to own a house. Lena states that “the house they put up for coloured in the areas costs twice as much as other houses” (Hansberry, 93). Therefore, it is clear that houses that were located in areas set aside for the black families were deemed to be better but were way too expensive. Therefore, Lena had no option but to purchase a house located in the whites’ community that was less expensive than those constructed in the black community areas (Nowrouzi). Ideally, housing for black people was not good but was very expensive compared to those built in the white regions for the white community. However, the dream of Lena to purchase a house was affected by the social construction of race.
Conclusion
Racism and discrimination based on colour and race have been successfully explored in A Raisin in The Sun. The author has demonstrated the lives of coloured families and the challenges they face to achieve their American dreams due to the issues of racism. The family is experiences challenges such as employment and housing, which are linked to their race and colour. Overcoming racism through diversity and inclusion in the United States will facilitate development and success in future generations.
