Allied Medical Waste Transport Case
Major Problem/Issue
As a business grows, it tends to face different challenges and issues that demand varying solutions. Recognizing and overcoming the pitfalls linked to growth is significant to enable a company to thrive and grow. Allied Medica Waste Transportation Inc. was established in 1988 to respond to the concerns expressed by the state, federal, and local regulators regarding biomedical waste management practices and the effect on human health and the environment due to improper management. At the time of establishment, only a few market players enjoyed a monopoly in the market. After establishing the company, the company has offered one of the largest biomedical services in Oklahoma state.
The company has planned to focus on veterinary waste, where they plan to venture the veterinary division into a profitable arm of the company. However, implementation and marketing have significant issues that Ms. West believes may influence the ability of the organization to meet its financial goals. Although the company believes in achieving its goals, several issues challenged the organization, such as marketing constraints, high cost of operation, and the absence of strict laws that controlled their procedures in the veterinary division. These issues have greatly affected the growing options since they provide the organization with the biggest obstacles.
The marketing activities in the new division have mirrored the activities that are used in the other locations. The AMWT has focused on personal selling because they conduct an on-site inspection of the facility, which is essential in determining whether the facility has met the current codes of waste management and the volume of waste every month. AMWT has also used direct mail pieces that have helped introduce the company and create awareness about the company’s operations. However, Ms. West feels that the current marketing approaches will create constraints in creating awareness about the new division. Marketing may face constraints such as the ability to put the product into the hands of the target consumers. Poor marketing campaigns will lead to constraints in the market which will lower the ability of the company to generate and distribute its message (Cesaro and Belgiorno, 2017).
Market penetration into veterinary waste has been affected by the absence of strict regulations and laws. Therefore, a lack of proper regulations and laws that control the procedures will slow market penetration, thus reducing participation. Ideally, the lack of state regulations regarding waste disposal creates a greater challenge for the company to gain consumers since the facilities are not required to comply with the state regulations. The waste management regulations focus on reversing and stopping environmental pollution by offering solid waste management mechanisms. Lack of regulation and laws have influenced reuse and recycling mechanisms as well as cleaner production innovations. For instance, lawmakers have established different regulations and laws that ensure the effective disposal of medical waste. However, there are no laws that are related to animal waste.
The high cost of operation has also influenced the ability of AMWT to expand into the new division. The veterinary waste services have come with additional costs since the waste treatment of animals may have a high cost. In the design for the veterinary waste division, there are expensive phases such as the technical design, which includes the allow technical documentation required for permitting and environmental impact assessment and total investment cost depending on compliance and challenge of procedures. To effectively implement the independent financial division, the establishment will require $100,000.
Analysis

The company has operated in Texas, Kansas, Wyoming, and Missouri. In addition, the company is planning to venture into a new division, veterinary waste services. Competitive Analysis
Companies such as Republic Services, BioMedical, and MedPro are among the leading rivals of comprehensive waste management. These companies offer services similar to AMWT, such as waste disposal., garbage collection, dumpster rental, and recycling which have contributed to the sustainable development of the communities.
Financial Analysis
The financial analysis of AMWT indicates that the company has managed to have a steady increase in the generation of profits and revenues through resource utilization. However, due to the existence of strong competitors, AMWT is not performing as expected. As a result, the company has now focused on long-term plans for investment and business activities such as the veterinary division, which they believe will drive sales and contribute greatly to its growth.
Implementation issues
The lack of state regulations on animal waste disposal has influenced the establishment of a new veterinary division. Ideally, this is because the legislation rules present on waste management have failed to cover the disposal of animal waste. However, this has made it a challenge for the company to venture into the animal waste sector.
Control Procedures
AWMT has developed control procedures in line with the state regulations, OSHA, and HIPAA waste handling procedures. These have effectively facilitated effective waste management practices with the company’s operations. Additionally, employees have been trained to support compliance and adhere to the operations through documentation and tracking waste disposal practices.
Strategic Implications of the Above Analysis
The strategic position of AMWT allows the company to explore various ventures due to its competitive advantage, capabilities, and competencies. These have offered the company the ability to grow and expand its product offerings.
Analysis for Multi-line of Business Organizations
Portfolio analysis
AMWT has focused on long-term investment and product differentiation to generate new services and build on the existing ones to maintain their financial stability. The roadmap to financial success has aimed at enabling the company to achieve its goals. Training of workers and maintaining a working culture that values employees has played an essential role in building the company’s success. Relatively, the company is customer-oriented, thus ensuring that customer service quality facilitates substantial growth of their customer base.
Restructuring needs
Restructuring needs entails reorganization of the process, which requires strategy and foresight (Gahutu, 2019). Changes with a business, such as additional departments, may demand structural changes which ensure that the company is ready for the present needs. For instance, the new division means that AMWT will require new salesmen and servicemen to ensure that they meet the new division’s goals. In addition, training programs will be restructured to include animal waste services which will ensure the operation is effective.
Strategic Implications of the Multi-line Business Analysis
AMWT strategy will have to be restructured since the current does not meet the needs of the animal waste services. Considerably, the division has failed to effectively respond to the new division’s goals, which means that restructuring is required. This will play a great role in ensuring that they maintain the quality of service and maintain a good reputation to their growing customer base.
Alternative solutions
Social Media Marketing
Social media marketing will enable the company to reach its full potential since it has tailored content for the specific audience driving awareness and engagement. Social media enables immediate interaction and customer feedback. Social media will increase the market reach and attract more customers, including the global markets. The limitation of social media marketing is that its time consuming since there is a need to keep engaging the audience on the social media platforms.
Employee training
Considerably, there are no formal guidelines for veterinary waste management. Therefore, AWMT should focus on training employees on the best practices and procedures to attract more veterinarians. Training shows that the company is committed to offering employees the best resources needed to guarantee that they increase their engagement and performance (Ansoff, Kipley, Lewis, Helm-Stevens, and Ansoff, 2018). For instance, training the marketing team on effective marketing skills will allow the employees to strengthen their skills.
Building strong relations with PETA
PETA focuses on protecting animals by ensuring that the rights of the animals are upheld. Since there are no obligations that govern the disposal of animal waste, AWMT should build a relationship with PETA to establish procedures and practices. Creating a close relationship with PEFA will enable them to win over veterinarians. Ideally, as the main consumers of the service, the company will be capitalizing on ethos on the marketing campaigns. However, the relationship can appear to be of personal interest rather than serving the community and environment.
Recommendations
Allied medical Waste Transport should invest in global marketing campaigns such as social media marketing, boosting the consumer base. Considerably, all the alternatives offer effective solutions but may fail to build on the consumer base and market reach. Therefore, there is a need to focus on the market reach since the company aims to drive sales and growth in the market. Reaching a larger audience will require a strong social media marketing strategy that will enable the company to reach its full potential.
Implementation Plan
In the implementation of social media marketing, there are three things that the company needs to consider, clearly defined target market, setting SMART goals, and developing a strategy on how to market in each of the social media platforms. One of the major things in the social media marketing plan is to manage the expectations of the team and stakeholders by removing unnecessary pressure and creating space for iterations and experiments. Based on that focus, the company will need to identify the essential resources to enable them to get there, such as talents.
