Citizenship and nationality are large parts of an individual’s identity. There are several different ways to obtain citizenship in
the United States. Regardless of how you became a citizen, what does being an American mean to you?

Introduction

Being American to me means having the freedom to be who I am without the fear of discrimination. It means that I can face the deepest and darkest fears of my being without the fear of being viewed as an outsider. Being an American also means that I have to deal with the arising issues in the country. America is not a perfect country, and like any other country, Americans have to work towards making their country better. This, therefore, means that being an American, I have to embrace the differences in the people of our country. America is a multiethnic country with people of different races, religions and sexual orientations. Being an American thus means accepting my fellow Americans despite the differences and understanding that because I do not know what it is like to be like them does not mean I am superior or inferior to them.

As an American, I am responsible for spreading love and spreading awareness on the importance of equality. I also have the ability to achieve the American dream. As an American I have the power to vote leaders whose policies align with my interests without being coerced or threatened (Usagov)[1]. My freedoms as a citizen are observed and that is what I consider to be the greatest things about being an American. It also means that different States have different policies. The freedom of States to make policies that favor their constituents is another thing that I consider as what it means to be American. It means one can choose to live in the State that favors their beliefs.

In conclusion, being an American citizen means having the freedom to express oneself without the fear of ridicule. It means living with my fellow Americans despite the differences in beliefs and other factors, and treating them as equals. Being an American citizen is all about love, unity and integration.
