Classical Development of Rhetoric
Abstract
Rhetoric developed slowly in ancient Rome but begun flourishing after conquering Greece. Rhetoric has been considered as the art and study of speaking and writing persuasively. This aims at educating, informing, and motivating a particular audience in a certain situation. This paper focused on the development of rhetoric as a practice as well as its influence on the development of classical society. Rhetoric played a significant role in classical society since it offered a heuristic for discovering, understanding, and establishing arguments for certain situations.
Classical Development of Rhetoric
Rhetoric grew under the Greek democracy in the fifth century. Rhetoric has been utilized as the organized practice of convincing communication approaches in vital parts of community life such as civil disputes, public affairs, education, and law courts. A key necessity for the improvement of rhetoric was the constitutional democracy that was developed in Greece. Cicero had a lot of thoughts that were linked to the use of rhetoric (Binkley, 2012). For instance, one of the most acknowledged thoughts is that the brain and the tongue should come together to act as a single force. According to Plato, rhetoric has been considered as the art of ruling the minds of other people (Enos, 2011).
According to the Roman and Greek rhetoricians, five stages have helped in building rhetoric as a practice. These five stages are known as canons and should be followed in the mastery and organization of written and oral rhetoric and vital to the success of presentations, speeches, and reports. These stages led to a common method through which rhetors, writers, and speakers in the Roman classical society organized their work. These stages include invention, arrangement, style, memory, and delivery (Binkley, 2012).
The invention entails the search for effective ways to offer information as well as acknowledge the arguments. This is linked to the rhetorical appeal of logos. Arrangement entails adjustment and organization of the parts to be presented coherently. The style focuses on rendering contents in an effective and appropriate style. The style emphasizes how the content will be said. Memory entails the deliberate utilization of mind to remember the structure of arguments and ideas. Delivery includes effective control of vocal modulation as well as effective gestures that develop pathos and ethos appeals.
The idea of classical rhetoric has been linked with the western custom of writing skills and speaking. The alternating roles that rhetoric has played in social life, politics, and education have accounted for the emergence of various rhetorical structures and schools of thought. The ancient Romans had incorporated different rhetoric elements. Rhetoric had begun as a way through which writers persuaded, motivated, and created interest in the audience during particular situations. The five canons of rhetoric: arrangement, innovation, memory, style, and delivery were first codified in classical Rome.
Over the years, rhetoric played an essential role in western education in training historians, lawyers, poets and statesmen, and counselors. According to Aristotle the capability in every case to see the available forms of persuasion are categorized in ethos, pathos, logos (Sansone, 2012). Rhetoric appeals can also be observed through color, graphic images, and visual information structure. In classical society, rhetoric has played has influenced speakers to effective persuaders in institutions and public forums.
Rhetoric ensured that writers and speakers were trained to effective persuaders of the audience in different situations such as assemblies, public forums, and courtrooms (Binkley, 2012). Rhetorical thinking led to a new way of speaking and offering meaning. For instance, the scientists had to persuade their audience to agree with their results by effectively demonstrating that their experiment or study was carried out reliably with sufficient evidence that supported the conclusions.
Rhetoric was an effective civic art that shaped communities, formed the character of citizens as well as largely influenced civic life. A man’s success and capability in a classical society dependent on their rhetorical ability. Relatively, successful rhetoricians were able to convince and influence people concerning any topic despite their experience in the field (Herrick, 2020). Rhetoric was an effective art of communication in classical society since it was a discipline that guided critical evaluation and skillful production in all usual settings such as law courts, public relations, professions, and ceremonial oratory.
Rhetoricians focused on the context of the message with the major concerns of the context being the place in which it was to be seen as well as the purpose of the message. For instance, in classical society, the citizens were expected to contribute to the public debate and speak on their behalf in courtrooms. In classical society, public speaking was significant to civic life. Rhetoric ensured that speeches and arguments were credible and persuasive since they are directly self-evident.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the origin and development of rhetoric can be traced back to classical society. Rhetoric has been an art that focuses on the written or said things and how they influence the audience through effective language and persuasion. In classical society, rhetoric played a great role in training communicators and how to interrogate the internal processes of thinking and writing. Rhetoric led to starting points for free expression, dialogues, and stimulated critical thinking.
