During the century or so preceding 1492, most of humanity lived in class-stratified agricultural societies. The great majority of people in these societies were peasant farmers, producing their own subsistence and forced to deliver a significant share of their output (or labor, or cash income) to an elite, or ruling class, a class that usually held claim to the land and almost always held both formal and real power over the peasants

Comments

In any event, it is now generally accepted that the diffusion of agriculture took place fairly long ago and by the Middle-Ages agriculture had reached most of those regions in the Eastern Hemisphere in which environmental conditions are favorable for farming.

Some of these mercantile-maritime cities were quite small, others quite large, but it appears that most of them were at roughly the same level in the development of protocapitalist institutions, classes, and technology. This is not surprising since they were intimately connected to one another in a tight network of trade, along which ideas, techniques, goods, and people flowed in all directions, in constant criss-cross diffusion.28

Comments

Despite the differences in races, class and other factors, people tend to intimately to one another through trade, cultural practices and behaviors. Like in the past when individuals remained connected through agricultural practices, human beings are still connected today through trade and agriculture.  Agriculture is a pillar of economic development and success in most modern societies.

When a farmer produces an agricultural “thing,”he or she must not only grow it but also transport it from field to farmstead and then to market, and must also transport inputs of water or fertilizer or labor from outside the farm. Farm production, therefore, involves bothchange of form and change of place.

Comments

These statements suggests that farmers are often forced to move from one point to another as they engage in agricultural activities and trade. Does it mean agricultural activities fuel migration of people?  From the article, it is evident that in the past farmers were moved and transported inputs and outputs to and from the market. Perhaps, this explains why some countries are characterized by people from different races and origins.
