Securing a Wireless Network

Failing to secure a wireless network means that everybody with a wireless network-enabled computer in a range of the house access point can use the internet connection. Kizza (2020) states that an insecure network is prone to attacks through different hacking techniques. Therefore, several steps are required to minimize security risks for the wireless network. These include changing the default password, setting a strong and unique password, network encryption, and protecting the service set identifier.

Changing the default password is necessary since they are easily acquired online (Kavianpour and Anderson, 2017). This will make it harder for the attackers to access the device. Having a strong and unique password will offer first-line defense against unauthorized users to access personal information through the network (Khan and Pathan, 2013). Turning on the wireless network encryption will effectively secure the information on the network data. Encryption will scramble the data so that it’s less deciphered by hackers. The wireless encryption will secure the network with an authentication protocol that demands a network key when the user tries to connect (Nazir et al., 2021). To prevent outsiders from easily gaining access to the network, the service set identifier must be protected.

Most devices are configured with a network name from the manufacturer. There is a high chance that if the neighbors have a similar device, then they are using the same SSID, which can be a security issue if the network is unencrypted. Therefore, the SSID will allow hiding the network from the list of people within the area. Changing the default name will make it challenging for outsiders to know the type of router, thus lowering the chance of attack (Guo, 2019). All the WIFI routers enable the users to protect their device’s service set identifier, making it more difficult for outsiders to find the network. Therefore, following these steps while temporarily setting up the wireless network for the children while moving into a new house will help prevent security issues such as hacking and unauthorized user access.
