Effects of Depression on the Families of the Affected Individuals

The Impacts of Depression on Families

Did you know that depression does not always have a good reason to affect a particular person? Arguably, although people can get depressed for what appears to be a “good” reason  perhaps they lost their job, or a close friend died, there doesn’t have to be a reason for how you feel if you have clinical depression. Even if everything in your life is going well, the chemicals in your brain that influence your mood may be out of balance, causing you to feel miserable. Important to realize, Clinical depression is a significant mental illness that has an impact on all parts of a person’s life. Depression not only affects a person’s mind and body, making it difficult to get through the day, but it also strains family relationships, elaborate, clinical depression has a significant effect on the children of parents who are struggling with depression, on the other hand, it also affects the lives of parents whose children are battling clinical depression.

To begin with, depression is a mental illness that can be caused by various circumstances, including psychological, social, and even physical ones. First, permanent stress and the inability to cope adequately with stressful conditions are linked to psychological aspects. Second, Relationship problems with family or friends are some of the social factors attributed to depression, whereas head injuries are physical causes (Rejaibi et al., 2022). Notably, depression is characterized by a loss of interest in all of life’s exciting and enjoyable aspects. On the other hand, Mood disorders and mood swings are momentary mental states that are a necessary part of daily life, whereas depression is more chronic and can lead to suicide in extreme cases.

It should be noted that, although depression only affects an individual, the illness has a huge impact on the family of the affected person. In particular, parental depression has adverse effects on children. First, if a child grows up with a depressed parent, there will be some negative impact on a child’s physical, emotional, social, and mental health. For example, while social isolation is a common symptom of depression, if a parent is depressed and refuses to contact others outside of the home, the child may lack vital social ties (Gordon, 2021). Similarly, a depressed parent may overlook basic requirements such as meal preparation and hygiene, as well as emotional support and security. Lack of regularity and predictability can lead to anxiety and tension in the child. In some cases, children will take on more responsibilities or attempt to care for the parent. Again, a child may fear that their depressed parent would be unable to provide them with the attention and security they require, which may be true. “If the child has mixed sentiments about their parent, they may blame themselves for their parent’s unavailability and unresponsiveness. This suggests that although the parent is ailing from this mental illness, the impact on their children is also as intense as it is for them.

In like manner, depression in children and teenagers does affect not only the individual but also their parents. When a child or adolescent is depressed, it can be tough for parents to deal with the situation, especially if they have additional children to look after. They are frequently pulled between providing care for the depressed child and balancing the care of their other children as well as their other commitments (Gordon, 2021). This difficult balancing act can lead to family discord, disappointments, guilt, and conflict due to the immense pressure that the parent of the depressed child has been subjected to.

By the same token, when their child or teen is depressed, parents can feel overwhelmed, anxious, worried, and afraid, especially if they have expressed the desire to commit suicide or other forms of self-harm (Gordon, 2021). Arguably it is intensely uncomfortable and frightening when your child is experiencing emotional distress. Notably, as a parent, you understand that your child requires your assistance more than ever, and your nervousness about how to be a ‘good’ parent in this situation can easily get in the way of thinking clearly and making well-thought-out decisions. In essence, depression in children can be a devastating moment for a parent as they are directly affected since they feel obligated to ensure the well-being of their children.

In conclusion, depression has a lot of negative effects on the families of those that are battling this mental illness. It is important to realize that depression in parents does affect not only the parent but also the children since they end up growing up without a responsible person taking care of them since the parent is unstable again parental depression also affects the child psychologically as they tend to think it is their fault the parent is depressed. On the other hand, in the case of a child or teen depression, the parent is also affected by the illness since they are responsible for their children’s well-being. In a nutshell, depression is a source of instability if and when it affects a member of the family.
