The Leon Golub, “White Squad V,” 1984 is one of the famous artworks designed to protest social justice. For the rest of his 60-year occupation, American artist Leon Golub, who died in 2004 at the age of 82, dug into the shock of social violence through frequent gruesome figuration. As he believed, the art was to forge a link to the actions deforming the culture. His dedication and motivation were felt from the massive accumulation of found imagery he stored on hand, from conventional monument to gay porn and breaking news images. When his family returned to the United States after staying in Paris for approximately six years, his fury was channeled to the Vietnam crisis; however, in the 1980s, he had twisted his focus to the killings happening in South Africa.
The so-called white squad V is considered part of a seven image sequences aimed at the Salvadoran death squads; a jackbooted armed man steps on the extended arm of a citizen stretched on the ground. The art’s intense agony looks viciously recent amid calls to demilitarize the police. Extracted from unstretched canvas 11 feet high and 12 feet wide in style called brutal pragmatism, the massive figures look like obstinate cutouts on a flat contextual, the violence both argumentative and rudimentary. Golub’s strategy was typically rough; he painted coating upon layer of acrylic, then discharged solvent on the piece, after which he craped everything with a meat cleaver.
