Population of Interest for the Study The study included all patients in the intensive care and medical-surgical units. The study focused on adult patients in eight Italian hub hospitals with severe Covid-19.
Sample 6135 hospital admissions cases 774 patients admitted in Italian hub hospitals.
Sampling Method The study relied on purpose sampling which was used to select all the data linked to nosocomial infection rate of medical surgical unites and intensive care units. The study relied on prospective sampling whereby the cases for inclusion are selected on the basis of exposure to a certain risk factor. The participants are then monitored to follow and see whether the condition of interest will be encountered. The prospectively collected data include adult patients that had severe Covid-19.
How Were Data Collected? A cross-sectional design was used to gather data on nosocomial infection before and during Covid-19 outbreak. The infection surveillance system was used to evaluate the infection control. Data collection on the hospital acquired infections was conducted by the infection control team. SPSS 20 was used to analyze the data to describe the percentage, frequency and confidence interval of the nosocomial infection rates before and during the Covid-19 outbreak. The data was gathered through multicenter retrospective analysis of the prospective data. Univariate, multivariate and descriptive statistics were used to assess the microbial cause, incidence, risk factors and resistance patterns of the confirmed hospital acquired infections.
