Article Review: Warehousing
Author’s Purpose
The purpose of this research article by Bumblauskas et al. (2017) is to shine a light on an area in supply chain management that has been neglected. According to the article, there has been increased attention to all the areas of the supply chain except the consumer. The authors of this article believe that it is rather shortsighted to overlook the consumers as there would be no demand, and thus there would be no supply chain management without them. Consumers/customers are an important part of SCM as their demand keeps the supply chain moving. The purpose of the authors is to focus on demand chain management, which focuses on the end-user in the supply chain strategy. Their aim is to explore DCM and look at its impact on supply chain management and how the end-user can be included in the supply chain management as they determine the product demand.
Background of the Issue
DCM is not a common terminology in supply chain management, with most of the articles in the literature review not focusing on DCM. According to Bumblauskas et al. (2017), the term DCM dates back to the 1990s. However, the results of their research area are inconclusive on the first person to introduce the DCM topic. According to the study, the studies available on DCM are not thorough, with many of the research articles they found not being thoroughly cited and thus making the literature unreliable. According to the literature review, most of the articles they found were highlighting the problems companies faced using DCM and how DCM has evolved over time. DCM is a relatively new term for most companies, and thus it has not been explored. The issue of DCM is an important topic in supply chain management as it ensures that enough research has been done on the customer and thus increasing the demand. If the products produced are best fitted to the customer’s taste, then the consumer is likely to demand more products as they are made to their taste.
Application to Supply Chain
DCM should be applied in supply chain management as it is an integral part of the supply chain. In the supply chain, there are raw materials, suppliers, manufacturers, and distributors, and the end-users are the consumers of the products. The end-users are an important part of these prices as the products are made for them, and they determine the supply of the products. If the demand is high, the supply is also high, and if it is low, then the supply is low. The demand and supply in the market also determine the prices of products. If there is a high supply of products and there is no demand, the prices are likely to be below. The demand chain management is thus an important field in SCM as it balances the equation in the market and ensures that the problem of oversupply is eradicated.
Managerial Implications
Managers should understand that sometimes it is easier to make profits if one understands the customer demands. The end-user is often not always the end-user, and thus it is crucial that managers get as close as possible to the end-user. Market trends keep changing, and thus, understanding the demands of the customer, or the end-user will ensure that they do not supply products that are not in demand (Vasista & AlAbdullatif, 2017). For example, in the telecommunication industry, there are different things that keep changing, and thus players in this industry have to be in touch with the end-user’s needs. For example, consumers want phones with powerful cameras and a high battery capacity in the current generation. Understanding this will help in the supply chain as the needs of the consumers will be met at the beginning of the supply chain and thus prevent the organization from making products that will not sell in the market.
It is also important to develop demand-based hiring techniques. This means finding the facilitators of demand satisfaction. The demand-based approach focuses on the end-user, which means appealing to the end-users needs (Liberty University Custom., 2020). Sometimes it can be difficult for a company to get in contact with the end-user, but it is important to understand the market needs. Some consumers are focused on having products that satisfy their needs and can have them at a reasonable price. Understanding the consumer’s needs and incorporating all these factors will help in the supply chain and maintain customers. managers should be focused on satisfying the needs of their end-users as the bible says in Psalms 107: For he satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things
Summary
DCM is an integral part of the supply chain that companies should consider. It is important for companies to establish customer relationships, and from the article, they are not being asked to abandon their old methods. They are being given a suggestion to incorporate a new method in their systems that could bring them more profits. Focusing on the needs of the customers is one of the most significant opportunities in the world today. Consumers want their needs to be attended to, and thus it is important to understand the consumer needs.
