Business Studies

Before starting the discussion you must read the Required Supplemental Reading Material posted in Blackboard Lectures: Go to Blackboard “Lectures” and you will see a post “Weeks 1- 6 Required Supplemental Readings.” Open this post and you will find that there are links to two papers you should read (Week 2.a and 2.b.) Then you write an initial “thread” regarding these two papers.

The Discussion Board asks you to discuss (talk about) the reading material with your fellow students. You can talk about what you learned from the articles; what you liked; what you did not like; what the authors missed in their article; how the articles relate to your experience and so on. When I read your discussions I want to see evidence that you have actually read the material and that you truly understand what you read and how it applied to the real world business environment.

ANSWER

Discussion (Communication)

The article provided in week 2. b talks about the perception of one’s employees in the managerial position. When one is in a leadership position, how they carry themselves, that is, dress, talk, and even their facial expressions, affect the people around them. In the first example given, the colleague called them in a conference room to ask whether they were mad at them for something (Bryant, 2013). The idea of being mad at them was all gotten from the facial expression. In reality, the facial expression was due to something they were deeply thinking about or their minds were occupied and thus did not pay attention to their non-verbal cues. This led to their colleague assuming that they had a problem with them hence tried to iron things out and understand what they had done wrong.

The article in 2.a looks like an advertisement for a company. It is an advertisement for a website that provides businesses with a platform for remote work. The website is advertising a great way to help remote employees to meet and discuss business easily. It is also promoting teamwork which is an essential part of the business.

I like the 2.b article as it addresses important aspects of leadership and being a leader. As a leader, people look up to one for how they act. A leader is a role model. This has affected me before. I was once working in a certain company, and I was absorbed in my work one day. One of my colleagues approached me and asked whether I was having a bad day. I asked why and she told me it was because I was too quiet and not as interactive as I usually am. I told them that I was busy with some project that needed to be completed. However, I learned to be aware of my non-verbal cues when in the office as most people pay attention to them, and I would not like to send the wrong message.
