It is important for leaders to constantly assess organization culture and while at it, incorporate collaboration. Collaboration is significant in that it helps to maximize on what employees contribute towards the process of assessing the culture. Employees are able to give ideas on areas that need improvement and which should remain the same. It is therefore crucial that all managers collaborate with employees during such important activities.
Collaboration ensures unity of purpose and keeps employees engaged in the transformation process. When leaders collaborate with employees, they stimulate motivation and the desire for change amongst the staff. Change becomes self-driven and because of the numerous contributions from the workers, it becomes so easy to align the current culture with new practices that enhance positive change. In essence, collaboration keeps everyone engaged.
A leader who encourages collaboration with the staff members is more likely to experience change initiated from the bottom up, the reason for this is because employees feel as part of the decision making processes and as such are free to give their ideas when they feel there is a need for change. Collaboration also reduces the chances of resistance to change because it means everyone is on the same page and shares the same insights about the need for change.
The first strategy I would use is sharing the goals of my team and ensuring they are well defined for each member to understand. I would also constantly communicate my expectation for collaboration to my team members. Lastly, I would foster an environment where community working is embraced as well as ensure honest and open communication.
I have experienced deficit of knowledge among teams and this behavior has been a hindrance to effective collaboration in the past. The lack of knowledge among team members was as a result of having multiple information sources and as such they were not receiving the correct information. The solution to such a challenge would require that the channel of communication be streamlined such that there is a clear path where message is passed from one end to the other, for effective collaboration this behavior should be replaced with effective and sufficient information.
