Misdiagnosis and underdiagnoses are common problems in the effective providence of quality healthcare and treatment in healthcare settings, with numerous risk cases recorded in telehealth. The presence of screens, virtual visits, unclear quality care standards, and unestablished state legislations in telehealth and telemedicine has resulted in increased overall healthcare costs among patients as they are forced to consult emergency departments for urgent healthcare services. Misdiagnosis and under diagnosis in telehealth among patients means wrong prescriptions and inaccurate treatment plans (Stone, 2016). This is a significant challenge and issue in the healthcare industry that requires urgent intervention, effective change, and adequate improvements such as championing for the development of stringent clear policies and sanctioning non-compliant healthcare agencies or those with increased misdiagnosed risks in telehealth.
Implementing the plan can be executed using classical change strategies, namely rational-empirical, normative-re-educative, or power-coercive approaches. While using the rational-empirical approach, addressing the problem includes disseminating adequate evidence-based research and information concerning the problem to policymakers and patients as they lack adequate information in understanding misdiagnosis and under diagnosis risks associated with telehealth. Providing policymakers with adequate information on addressing the problem would establish clear quality care standards and policies, as they are rational beings who understand the justification of the change (Sabra, 2014). Using the normative-re-educative approach will include using healthcare nurses targeting patients or policy maker’s social norms, values, and beliefs that telehealth is facilitating increased misdiagnosis risks hence requires re-evaluation and a halt until better diagnosis and treatment procedures are developed. Finally, the power-coercive approach would help in using authority figures using their power to track agencies and organizations with high levels of misdiagnosis cases then offering punitive and compensatory damages to offended patients while creating sanctions such as financial or funding sanctions to discourage that behavior as it hurts patient’s financial status and healthcare quality (Sabra, 2014). Through this approach, legitimate authorities in the healthcare industry can develop clear and stringent policies to address increased misdiagnosis cases in telehealth.
I would use both the rational-empirical and power-coercive change approaches to implement the change as they directly include the type of change wished. Moreover, implementing this type of change requires a greater influence and support from authority figures with legitimate power to ensure effectiveness and maximized healthcare providence and effective policy development.
