Good vs. Evil in The Exorcist

Part four of The Exorcist intensifies the battle between good and evil. Regan, possessed by a demon, makes her condition deteriorate rapidly. Father Karras expresses fear when he highlights that an exorcism can take “weeks, even months [and] frequently it failed altogether” (Blatty 191). The group awaits the arrival of Father Merrin, who comes at night unexpectedly. The fight between good and evil begins immediately. Father Merrin arrives when the demon-possessed Reagan shouts the Father’s name in such a fierce tone. From Chris’s perspective, the two representations of good versus evil acknowledge each other’s presence in what she says was “like recognition” (Blatty 269).

The actual confrontation begins a few moments later where before commencement, Father Merrin issues strict orders to avoid conversations with the demon saying that “The demon is a liar. He will lie to confuse us, but he will also mix lies with the truth to attack us. The attack is psychological, Damien. And powerful. Do not listen. Remember that. Do not listen.” (Blatty 274). Later in Reagan’s room, the duo makes lengthy prayers asking God to help them in their fight against evil. In the prayers, the demon is quick to point out everyone’s weaknesses in the room, including Chris telling that she choose her career before parenthood and ended up divorced (Blatty 288). Father Marrin stays focused, determined to win the battle of good versus evil using the guidance of the sacred words and objects such as holy water. On the other hand, the devil is said to be responsible for everything wrong in the world. The fight continues, and in the end, the good triumphs over evil.
