Face-to-face and electronic communications are different ways that individuals engage each other to pass essential information. Both are offer an interpersonal way of communicating and expressing thoughts and feelings. However, they differ in line with message understanding, privacy risks, convenience, and effectiveness in message delivery.

  2. In-person and electronic communication are both interpersonal forms of communications (Venter, 2019). They provide individuals with the opportunity to exchange information, ideas, and feelings.
  3. Both methods can help individuals to express their thoughts through the help of visual cues. When interacting in-person, people can use facial expressions to pass a message. Also, when relying on electronic communication, emojis can help one to express a point.

  1. In face-to-face communications, people can gain a deeper understanding of a message through the tone and body language. However, online communication does not always provide the chance to deeply understand the content of the message.
  2. Electronic communication is convenient compared to face-to-face communications. Interacting via text and message offers convenience irrespective of the time and distance. As Lee et al. (2011) notes, electronic communication is possible across distance places, cultures, and without time constraints. It offers a chance to strengthen social ties. For example, if someone experiences an emergency situation, they can communicate with their friends through a call or text for help. However, face-to-face communications are highly affected by time and distance.
  3. While face-to-face communications offer instant and honest feedback, electronic communication generates delayed interactions and irrelevant feedback at times. When two people speak directly, they acquire immediate feedback (Battistón, Vidal & Kirchmaier, 2017). However, sending a message or email might lead to delayed response that can make the message irrelevant.
  4. While face-to-face communications have information privacy, electronic communication are characterized by numerous privacy threats. Online communications attract massive privacy risks (Mekovec, 2010). This makes some people reluctant to communicate online. However, face-to-face communications attract increased privacy, especially when the interacting parties remain committed to the element at hand.

Face-to-face and electronic communications have key similarities and differences that might make people select one over the other. The responsibility lies on the communicating parties depending on the goals they have for their communication process.
