I agree with Cinthia that Saudi Arabia and China are different in terms of politics and state organization. China relies on an atheistic authoritarian state run while Saudi Arabia is governed through a hereditary monarchy, explaining the purpose of Islam’s protection and perpetuation (Lippman, 2018). However, in terms of upholding human rights, the two countries have been accused of exploitation rather than upholding human rights. This includes restricted freedom of expression, the right to education, and access to the internet.

International human rights organizations have documented human rights violations in Saudi Arabia and China. On the other hand, China has been accused of curbing human rights in the name of national security by detaining human rights activists and censoring the internet (Dammer & Albanese, 2013). Regarding freedom of expression, Saudi Arabia is known to have one of the most restrictive environments in the world. The state controls all major media outlets, and independent journalists face harassment and intimidation. In China, the government has tightened its grip on the internet in recent years, using artificial intelligence to censor content and track users. The International community has condemned China for serious human rights violations such as psychological and physical abuse and forced disappearance.

I also concur with Cinthia that the response from the United States has effectively put pressure on China and the international human rights court to bring accountability to those responsible for the severe violations of human rights in China. The US response to human rights violations in Saudi Arabia has been much more muted. In recent years, the kingdom has come under fire for its abysmal human rights record, especially regarding women’s rights and freedom of expression. The US has been accused of turning a blind eye to these abuses in return for Saudi Arabia’s cooperation on counter-terrorism and oil. However, the US has been gradually criticizing Saudi Arabia’s human rights record and has called for reform in the kingdom.
