ANSWER
Analysis of Processing and Incarceration of Women and Girls through the Criminal Justice System
Chapter Summary
Even though women are likely to be sentenced and incarcerated, they often receive lesser charges and jail probation supervision sentences. Those who are lucky experience release during pretrial stages. Also, it is important to note that women attract a shorter sentence compared to men. Racial differences also determine the sentence offered, with women of color receiving harsher sentences than the whites. Overall, women are advantaged than men because they stand a better chance of being placed under correctional supervision while they integrate with other community members. This creates awareness revolving around gender-responsive programs targeting to meet the needs of female wrongdoers. For instance, prisons allowing mothers to remain with their infants during incarceration helps them create a quality bond with their children amidst their prevailing situations.
Interesting Topic
Probation is one of the exciting topics because it offers a point of flexibility, especially for women and girls. These are segments that are likely to experience adverse situations in jail. Probation ensures that they serve their sentence and also protects their well-being. Its main aim is to integrate individuals back into their communities (Senior & Ward, 2016). Probation ensures that offenders can be reintegrated back as they serve their sentences. Women and girls benefit increasingly from this program. Gray (2019) highlights a case of probation incarceration where more priority is placed on women’s emotional connection with their children. This gives sentenced women the opportunity to meet their children’s needs. One of the crimes attributed to the information shared is that of women’s abuse in prison. As highlighted by Setty and Andrew’s (2021) research, Women are often abused in prison, which showed that New Jersey was closing its only women’s prison due to numerous allegations of abuse against convicts.
The case revolves around inappropriate treatment by the officers where women convicts are handled inappropriately in a manner that causes physical harm. For example, a woman was pushed against the wall while another was punched and suffered an orbital wall fracture (Setty & Andrew, 2021). These forms of physical harm exist as one of the rationales behind correctional services, where the central rationale is to protect women’s interests.
