Concerning The Current Mideast Crisis and The Islamic State Movement in Syria, Explain Turkey’s Role in The Conflict

Turkey has played and continues to play a key role in the conflicts in Mideast and Syria. Turkey’s quest to have more control in the region has led to fighting and power vacuums often occupied by extremist groups like ISIS. In Syria, Turkey has often disputed the regime there and preferred more influence in the affairs of the country. Years of water dispute, territorial conflict, and clash over the Kurdistan Workers Party. Turkey has invaded Syria to slow the advancement of Kurds in Northern. Turkey is afraid that such influence can overflow to their country and lead to more internal conflict with Turkish Kurds. Turkey’s attack on Syria has led to a power vacuum in some regions that have been in the past exploited by ISIS fighters. By destabilizing both the Kurdish and Syrian governments, Turkey has further escalated the conflict in Syria and unprecedented humanitarian crisis. Turkey’s fight to gain a 30 kilometer “safe zone” in northern Syria has further increased fighting in the region (Aktürk, 2017).

Turkey has been constantly threatened by the Kurdish problem both at home and in Syria. The huge Kurdish population panning from Turkey to Syria has threatened Turkey’s confidence in the region. Turkey has also launched offensive attacks against Kurds in Iraq due to their affiliation to the PKK. Turkey continues to support the Muslim Brotherhood, a controversial group that has caused conflicts in places like Egypt.  Turkey is also playing role in the Horn of Africa with a considerable presence in Somalia. This situation has escalated tension with other Gulf nations like Saudi Arabia that have allied with opposition to Turkey. Turkey has sought to increase its influence in the middle east in the last two decades. Turkey has viewed the region as its supposed sphere of influence and has in many years ramped up cooperation drives (Günay, 2017). The current Turkish regime believes that Turkey should have the same influence that the Ottoman Empire once had.
