Reaction Paper based on the three Videos from the Reentry Project above.

Reflection

From the videos, I have learned about intermediate sanctions and restorative justice. Intermediate sanctions are the correction options for offenders that are not too restrictive and are meant to alleviate the overcrowding of prisons and allow them to participate in programs that help change them. Intermediate sanctions are a part of restorative justice. The restorative approach entails a response to crime which involves the offender meeting with community representatives. The two videos that I have watched have enhanced my understanding of the two concepts.

From the two YouTube videos, I have learned about reentry for young adult offenders. These programs are meant to help young offenders rejoin the community, and some are inclusive of all ages.  These reentry programs help give young people another chance, getting them jobs and high school degrees (UCLA, 2011). All these efforts are meant to help the formerly incarcerated youth fit into society and avoid committing the same crime.

The second video highlights the stories of former offenders who have been incorporated into a reentry program. In the forum, some had good jobs before they went to jail and are now trying to find their way back into society. From this forum, I have learned that it is difficult to fit in the community once one has been incarcerated and that most of them often go back to prison if they do not get the right support (Philly, 2017). The challenges that they face include a lack of job opportunities and difficulties in their social lives. Most of them are traumatized and depressed after their jail experiences, and the reentry programs help them fit into the community and have their lives back.
