For this discussion board, come up with an idea for a diversionary (instead of jail/prison) program. You are free to pick which demographic or type of offender (men, women, elderly, juveniles, sex offenders, gang members, etc.) that you want your program to target. Answer the below questions on what/how your program will work.

Solution to Reduce Recidivism

1. Who is your target offender? Why did you pick this type of offender?

My target offender is male drug drug-related offenders. I picked this group because males are more likely to fall into drug-related offenses mostly for drug trafficking. According to Federal Bureau of Prisons statistics, nearly half of incarcerated individuals are in or drug-related offenses. While America has for a long time attempted to solve drug-related issues with prison, some people are just on the web because of health and mental health issues. If the underlying problems that these people face can be solved, they can overcome dependence on drugs and reduce recidivism. These men need specialized treatment to correct addiction rather than incarceration.

2. What is the plan for developing the program? (funding, people involved in putting it together, etc.)

The program will ensure that drug offenders receive substance abuse treatment because they need medical attention more than incarceration. The program would receive funding from the federal and state governments. A portion of budgets set aside for incarceration will set aside for sponsoring substance abuse treatment among drug-related offenders. Different corrections and health departments of states will be responsible for putting the program together. The correction department will coordinate with public health officials to ensure that programs that offer comprehensive substance abuse treatment are set in each state.

3. How long is the program? What would cause a participant to “fail” the program?

The program will take 3 to 12 months depending on the complexity of the particular cases. Participants who return to drug use after leaving the program will be readmitted once. If they return to drug use after second discharge from the treatment program, they will be considered to have failed the program.

4. Would there be multiple groups/agencies involved? (law enforcement, corrections, courts, churches, nonprofit groups, etc.)

The program will involve multiple groups to offer participants the highest level of support they need. The department of corrections and public health departments will be central in the implementation. Churches and community organizations will be given access to provide support to the participants.
