At a major metropolitan hospital that I was working as a medical assistant, an Islamic man refused I help the wife in the delivery of their baby. This clearly shown how religious beliefs have influenced healthcare and caused patients to forego the need for care or even refuse any life-saving procedures. Such a patient decided that to choose faith over medical assistance. The incident led to negotiation and exploration between the me, the patient, the practitioners, and the Islamic man.
The man had to be convinced that I had personal and professional values, morals, and ethics that allow me to assist all patients with different religious backgrounds. This incident is a clear indication of how the subject of cultural competence has influenced health care practices, and demands increased attention. This is due to the demand for high-quality care and improved access to healthcare services in a more culturally competent manner in diverse populations.
Spirituality and religion are considered as vital factors among the American lines despite their individual beliefs and culture. Most religions have their traditional beliefs that result in treatment obstacles in the hospital setting. For instance, a patient may need a special accommodation in terms of food and the type of physician that is seeking the scheduled treatment to fit their religious beliefs.
An individual can have faith-based worries such as worries about someone of the opposite sex offering treatments. A number of individuals are comforted and calmed when they turn to their faith during major medical trails. Healthcare organizations and health professionals need to invest their education regarding different religions all over the world. Through exposure and training, they will create a sense of awareness and eliminate misconceptions through valuable conversations with the patient and family. Due to the number of patients that turn to their beliefs during the hard times, it is important for the healthcare professional or medical assistants to remain empathetic and accommodate the patents to ensure that they have received the best care.
