OTC Herbal Substances Abuse and Addiction

Herbal supplements, especially those that do not react negatively in the body, seem like the go-to solutions to some of the health problems and conditions faced daily. I did not know that herbal substances sold over the counter can be addictive. I was aware that they could be harmful in other ways, but I did not know that they are also an addiction risk. It is evident that some of the most addictive and powerful substances are extracted from plants, and thus the risk of abusing unregulated OTC herbal substances increases. If drugs such as cocaine, Marijuana and tobacco are plant extracts, then there is a possibility of the herbs having more side effects than let on, which could lead to addiction (492). They are unregulated and sold over the counter could also lead to problems such as being abused by children.

Herbal products do not fall under the FDA standardization and regulation, and thus the products could cause addiction, and one would not be aware. For example, if Marijuana had not been established as a drug, it could have been classified among the herbal substances that are used to deal with pain and reduce anxiety. Cannabis is, however, highly addictive and can be misused if used as a herbal substance. Cannabis is a perfect example of how herbal substances could contain extracts that are addictive and can be abused (494). Herbal substances can be abused, and addiction can occur if used in large quantities. Herbal substances, however, do not have a high risk of addiction, and if one is addicted, they are relatively easier to treat.
