Hello Solorzano, I agree that the question of whether marketing creates needs or meets the needs of the consumers has been argued over by intellectuals. There are many opinions concerning marketing and its purpose. I agree with you that marketing satisfies the needs of the consumer, and it does not create any needs. I believe that the marketer identifies the needs of the consumers and satisfies them. The consumer’s needs shape the market, and the market does not shape the needs of the consumer. It is upon the consumer to differentiate between their needs and wants, and the marketer must ensure that they satisfy the consumer’s needs.

2nd Response

Hello Savanna, your opinion that marketing shapes consumer needs is valid. There is even a possibility that marketing influences the needs of the consumers. However, I am not of the opinion that marketing creates the needs of the consumers. This is because I believe that the consumer is responsible for their needs and wants, and thus the marketer is merely tasked with satisfying those needs. It is true that the marketer can sometimes manipulate the psychology of the consumer, but the marketer cannot create the needs of the consumer.

3rd Response

Hello Horta, I agree that the marketer has the power to influence the consumer’s mindset. However, the marketer does not create the need; the marketer makes the consumer realize that they have a certain need, and the marketer ensures that they notice the need. The marketer can influence the consumer’s mindset by advertising the products. The amazon example you gave is an excellent example of how marketers satisfy the consumer’s needs and the importance of branding in ensuring that the products catch the eye of the marketer. However, I still believe that marketers satisfy needs.

4th Response

Hello Palladino, I agree with you that marketing’s purpose is to increase awareness of the brands. I also believe that marketing reflects the needs of the consumers and thus does not create the need of the consumer. The examples you have given on bottled water and car brands are excellent example of how marketers reflect the needs of the consumers. Marketers have become better at predicting their consumer needs, especially in the social media age, which has made it look like the marketers create the needs instead of satisfying them.

5th Response

Hello Squire, I do not agree with the notion that marketing shapes consumer needs. I believe that marketing reflects the consumer needs ad satisfies those needs. The marketer merely presents their brand, and the consumer decides whether or not the products presented by the marketer are needs or wants. It is true that the marketer can capitalize on the psychology of the consumer, but that does not mean that they shape the needs of the consumer. Watching a jeep advertisement makes me want to own a jeep at some point in my life, but that does not mean that I will immediately buy a jeep. There are chances I will go for another model depending on my needs.

6th Response

Hello Maria, first I like how you have stated by explaining the different types of marketing. However, I cannot entirely agree that marketers create the need of the consumer. I agree that the marketer satisfies the consumer’s needs and reflects on their needs. It is true that, to some extent, online marketing can push one to buy some products, but this is evidence that marketing reflects their needs.
