Effectively Teaching English as a Foreign Language

Introduction

English is one of the most preferred languages of choice and has become a dominant language in many domains, making it a lingua franca globally. This has led many people to learn English in school or later in their careers to remain competitive and relevant in both English and non-English speaking environments. Teaching English as a foreign linguistic entails educating non-native English learners and individuals who do not take English as their primary language. Coaching English as a foreign linguistic may include working abroad, private tutoring, working in state and language schools for larger groups. This paper will focus on what it takes to effectively coach English as a foreign linguistic. Teaching English as a foreign language involves focusing on varying facets of language and communication such as writing, listening, speaking, and reading to fulfill the communicative requirements.

Teaching English as a foreign language requires one to convey the English language interestingly, articulate, and encourage the learners to improve their English skills through speaking, listening, writing, and reading (Setiyadi, 2020). Some typical activities for coaching English as a foreign linguistic include language games and role-playing to boost the learners’ English conversational and writing skills.

Learning a new language can be a time-consuming and daunting process that requires appropriate levels of engagement. The levels of engagement vary from the materials being used, the modes, and the nature of the language activity that is taking place. These greatly influence coaching English as a foreign language. Teaching the basics is one of the effective ways of building a foundation for everything. For instance, teaching alphabets and numbers can make it easier for learners whose native language has the same alphabet as English. Teaching pronunciation is vital, especially for sounds that are difficult when teaching English as a foreign language. Instructing the learners on nouns, verbs, and adjectives are some basics that a learner needs to understand to feel comfortable in basic sentence construction.

Teaching English as a foreign language entails focusing on writing, reading, speaking, and listening. Focusing exclusively on one and leaving the others to fall behind influences the learner’s ability to expose too much of the language. Focusing on the different aspects of the language makes it more effective to teach English (Lennon, 2020). Some of the obvious aspects are grammar and vocabulary. Learning vocabulary is important not only for the individual words but also pronunciation, spelling, and level of formality of the word, the common collations of the word, and the word formality. Ideally, learning grammar entails understanding the tenses and their common usage. For instance, the audio-lingual method is one of the best ways of teaching English as a foreign language. This style focuses on reinforcement to enable the correct use of a trait and incorrect use of a trait and offer feedback. The learner uses the English language directly without using their native language to explain grammar and new words in the target language.

Success in teaching English in a foreign language requires encouraging the learner to take ownership of the language. Ideally, before teaching and understanding the English language, one must form a deep relationship with the language (Lennon, 2020). The deep connection and love for the language should be passed on to the English learners. This means encouraging them to find their path, working in peer groups, and focusing on learning activities to increase their love and connection with the language. Considerably, this brings a positive impact on both their achievement and effort in English learning.

Teaching English as a foreign language requires a focus on communication. There are different techniques of communication that impact understanding. Focusing on the communicative approach makes communication the main focus of language learning. The communicative approach means that one learns the language successfully and comes through communicating the true meaning (Pecorari, 2018). For instance, the communicative approach guides the teaching activities to try and offer real and meaningful communication. The main focus of the communicative approach is to prepare the learners to be confident communicators for different real-life conditions through different and repetitive oral practices as well as the learner to learn cooperation. For instance, the spoken language allows one to produce a sequence of vocal sounds such that they reconstruct sound essential for approximation of the original meaning.

To effectively teach English as a foreign language, one must focus on active and participatory learning (Setiyadi, 2020). Participatory learning entails learners getting involved actively in the learning process. The focus is on actively engaging the learner to take part in the learning process. There are a set of skills that need to be considered while teaching English as a foreign language. These are receptive and productive skills that need to be analyzed, deconstructed, and practiced for effective learning. Some of the skills include reading and listening as well as speaking and writing. These lead to a linguistic interaction such as the conversation between the learner and the teacher and among other learners, thus collaboratively constructing their knowledge and comprehension. Interaction maximizes the opportunities to practices as learners often speak, thus fostering language development. Active and participatory learning leads to linguistic and conversational modifications in the discourse, thus offering learners the necessary coherent linguistic input.

Conclusion

In summation, teaching English as a foreign language requires focusing on language and communication aspects such as writing, listening, speaking, and reading to satisfy the communicative needs. Relatively, focusing on contextualization, teaching basics such as structures, words, sounds is essential in introducing, exemplifying, and practicing language items. Encouraging the learners to take ownership in the language leads to successful teaching of English as a foreign language.
