Critical response to John Tierney’s essay, The Reign of Recycling

Thesis statement

Even when sorting everything in the bins, one may probably assume that recycling may be beneficial to the community and protection of the environment, which instead is a way of wasting time.

Evidence Used

Tierney uses plastic and glass and metal emissions into the atmosphere, where he relates them to other factors causing carbon emissions such as the airplanes and other industries.

Critical response

According to John Tierney, recycling may not be worth the cost or effort required to achieve its goals. He points out, for example, that when a passenger makes a round trip flight in coach between New York and London, he /she offsets a greenhouse impact which would require recycling of 40,000 plastic bottles. Sitting in a business first class, where each passenger takes up more space on the other hand, would be more like using over 100,000 bottles. Tierney also observes that to reduce carbon emissions, people could accomplish more by sorting paper and aluminum cans, rather than worrying about yogurt containers and a half-eaten slice of pizza, which is contrary to what many people assume. Tierney makes some convincing points. For example, he says that for glass, one has to recycle three tons to get about one ton of greenhouse benefits. He also states that recycling one ton of plastics saves only slightly more than one ton of carbon dioxide. This means that recycling one ton of metal or paper saves about three tons of carbon dioxide, which is better as compared to other materials.

However, researchers, have noted that there are indeed benefits to recycle, but not in the way that, many people have been imagining. All in all, I believe that recycling of waste materials is a great practice that ought to be practiced by all the people since it has multiple benefits that could help in environmental conservation and reducing the adverse effects of climate change.
