Why America is Self-Segregating

The United States has been a land of segregation, Slavery, and oppression. The Article “Why America is Self-Segregating” by Danh Boyd attempts to show why America is a diverse but self-segregated country. The article offers a comprehensive analysis of the trends of America’s self-segregation and how it influences the social fabrics within the United States.  Boyd (2017) in her article shows how challenging it is to escape self-isolation in physical communities and online.

The essay has attempted to show what is happening in modern America and the reasons for increased tension between the cultures, political parties, and races. (Boyd, 2017) mentions four major points that have led to an increase in self-segregation within America; technology, diversity challenges, privatization of the military as well as college life. Boyd has explored various ways through which the problem can be solved through traditional social systems.

The internet and technology were developed with the intent of connecting friends, family, and new friends to enable communication and sharing of information among people. Many people believed that the internet would connect individuals and close the gaps resulting from cultural differences through diversification. Boyd (2017) argues that in a world with immeasurable devices to connect there is increased polarization, fragmentation, and de-diversification. Through this statement, Boyd tries to encourage the reader to look at how technology has led to social segregation. Anyone using social media platforms either Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter, they are entitled to seeing a rant, meme, or political post. However, these have played a big role in amplifying things that lead to divisive actions and decisions which have also compromised social solidarity. For instance, Facebook is playing a big role in increasing social divisions.

Boyd (2017) attempts to argue that American institutions have also been designed to promote segregation. This is because most of the institutions have underpinned the democracy of the Americans forcing people within the country to encounter variations. She focuses on the military and education which pair up to increasingly impact the socialization of people within the United States. For instance, schools have been developed with an educational plan that is aimed at killing diversity. When people sign up, they are promised training and employment opportunities where motivations vary increasingly and the aspects result in diversification. Danah in her essay considers that an effective education system will support diversity among the students to reduce segregation.

Relatively, the military should be returned to the traditional voluntary approach rather than being privatized for everyone to feel the sense of service and belongingness. Boyd (2017) has explored the theme of language that is utilized by young people and how it is understood in the historical dynamics of segregation. Danah encourages the reader to consider the rhetoric that is utilized currently as compared to earlier times.

Boyd (2017) states that a healthy democracy can only be developed through a highly connected and diverse social fabric. This demands the establishment of contexts in which the American public voluntarily focuses on the diversity challenges to develop bonds that will have long term benefits. However, the public has systematically failed to do this through technological advancements that have made life easier and increased self-segregation.
