The Power of Symbolism:
An Annotated Bibliography
Research Question: Is there a symbol in the story? What does the red sweater symbolize?
Thesis: In “Eleven,” the red sweater is a symbol of the main character’s transition from girlhood to womanhood.

“Eleven” is a short story about a girl named Rachel which has problems with showing that a red sweater does not belong to her. The girl just turned eleven and struggles with authority, and situations in which she is being accused. This text, which functions as my primary source, is full of symbolism. I want to use “Eleven” to demonstrate the deeper meaning of the text. The classroom, as well as the red sweater are going to be my main sources of symbolism.
“Whitehead, Alfred N. Symbolism, Its Meaning and Effect.” Google Books, Google,

The text “Symbolism – It´s Meaning and Effect” talks about definitions, explanations, and the meaning and effect of symbolism. Alfred North Whitehead shows examples of how symbolism is being used, and talks about language as itself. This book is going to function as a version of a dictionary. My plan is to use this source to make my text clearer and easier to understand. Whitehead´s descriptions and definitions are going to help to define key words and explanations.

Literary Techniques used to enhance a Theme
Annotated Bibliography
Research Question: What literary techniques are used to enhance a theme of the story?
Thesis: In “Finger,” the literary techniques that enhance the story’s theme, which is the conflict of the conscious and the subconscious minds include anagnorisis, anthropomorphism, and magical realism.
Victor, Gary. The Finger. 2010. https://genius.com/Gary-victor-the-finger-annotated. 01 August 2020.
This source is the primary source that forms the basis for an in-depth analysis of the “Finger” story by Gary Victor. It involves Dread Lanfe, the main character who turned to violence and theft hiding behind political activism’s mask. However, one day, while stealing from Fanfayon, a wealthy businessperson, the robbery went sour with the presence of a finger and golden ring haunting him during the night. This text will profoundly help in the development and discussion of the developed thesis. It embodies all the literary techniques and communicates a conflict of self in the conscious and subconscious minds. Primarily, this primary source outlines battles of the minds of the characters, which is brought out through the emphasis with the finger (magical realism, anthropomorphism) and in the end Lanfe dies after realizing his true nature and what part of the mind won (anagnorisis).

This source acts as a source of definitions for the three literary techniques used in the story. It is a valuable source. It provides a strong foundation for increased understanding of what terms used, such as anagnorisis, anthropomorphism, and magical realism, mean and their effects in the enhancement of the story’s theme. The definition increases understanding of the term its utilization and description in the story events, and effects such as giving a deeper meaning of the story, helping in reading between the lines and understanding their role in enriching and enhancing the theme of the “Finger” story.
