Speech self-Critique

Overall I was not unhappy with the way I delivered my speech. It was not perfect, but I think it was an improvement and better than I thought. I was fairly satisfied with the speech I gave because I showed a lot of confidence and conviction. Watching, my speech was not boring, and I could manage to get the audience’s attention. There are a few thongs I could improve on, like be a bit more confident. At the beginning of my speech, there were signs of nervousness, which was not a good sign. However, I managed to overcome the anxiety and deliver my speech with minimal fear, which is something I can appreciate and term as an improvement on my side.

I showed a lot of confidence while delivering my speech. This can be seen from the posture and the way I managed to keep eye contact. I was more nervous while preparing for the speech than when I was delivering it. As a person, I tend to get nervous before the actual task, but I manage to summon courage once it is time to deliver the task. I stuttered more while practicing than when I delivered the speech, and that is a sign that I was tense when practicing for the speech. What one can learn from these feelings is that sometimes one cannot help but be nervous, especially when tasked with talking to an audience. It also helps a lot when one realizes that those feelings are normal and that overcoming them is easy. I learned from this experience that confidence enables one to do things they did not think they could do. With enough confidence, one can deliver a presidential speech without stuttering.

What I mostly commended from my speech was eye contact. Eyes speak volumes, and maintaining eye contact with an audience enables them to connect with you while delivering a speech. Eye contact is also a sign of confidence, and people are likely to listen to you more when you maintain eye contact. My vocals were also strong, and I did not experience the shaky vocals that one may experience when nervous. The strong vocals made me sound convinced about what I was talking about, and it also made it sound better. The one thing I would change next time is my body posture and body movements. I used minimal movements, and the posture I used in this instance was a low-power posture. The speech would have looked better if I was in a high-power pose. I also looked nervous initially, and that is something I will try to change in my next speech.

To prepare for the speech, I first wrote down the important points, and then I wrote a rough draft of the speech I was going to deliver. After writing the final copy, I practiced in front of a mirror before sitting my family down to listen to the speech. My family was a good audience, and they gave me some important pointers that I applied in my speech delivery. The next time I prepare for a speech, I will ensure that my final draft is well-written with no spelling mistakes. The one I used in this speech had some problems. I will also get a third opinion from my peers as they are likely to give me better constructive criticism than my family. In general, preparing for the speech was a good experience.
