How Fredrick Henry’s Attitude on War Change Through the Book “A Farewell to Arms”

From the novel, Fredric Henry had multiple changes in attitude the reading. Some of the attitudes that changed from him included attitudes on war, Catherine, and friends, which significantly changed. Concerning war, he had involved throughout himself in, at first, he was greatly involved with it and didn’t care about its repercussions and was fully involved, but with time, he became less enthusiastic about the entire war after he became more aware of it (Hemingway, 2012).    His enthusiasm towards war began to fade when he began caring about a woman with home; the interest was growing.

There was a negative correlation between his feelings toward Catherine and his feelings towards war. The more he started caring about Catherine, then the more he cared lesser about war.   Throughout the book, Henry had a friend called Rinaldi, with who he remained friends with throughout the book (Hemingway, 2012). Despite them being best friends, their relationship also changed. According to the author, all friendships that Henry had entered changed, where they either died or left him. Nevertheless, Henry never portrayed any form of lasting effect on the loss of these friends.  However, after meeting Catherine, this changed since he started caring about her more than everything else, including the war.

The book demonstrates that love had an impact on the attitude Henry on matters of war. He at first thought that war was everything and was the only thing that could make him happy. He eventually realized that one person could bring fulfillment to his life, rather than just war. He also realized that he had a careless attitude on some issues such as war, where they started declining once he started getting fulfillment (Hemingway, 2012).  He hence started changing his perspective and gets boiling down after realizing the true horrors and trauma that war brought upon him.  It is finale manifest that throughout the book, he only longed for one thing, which is

having true and positive feelings.
