Literary works like Frankenstein explore the “human condition” or experiences that humans encounter. Here are some ideas of places where you might find appropriate sources for this assignment:
Your thesis statement and paper must address both the literary qualities and the social issues as you evaluate the novel, Frankenstein. However, keep in mind, your essay does not have to answer ALL of the questions listed under each topic. Only answer the questions you feel are the most relevant to the thesis statement you choose. Develop your essay so it has a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Ensure that each of your claims is supported with valid evidence from the novel, Frankenstein, and at least three other credible external sources.3

Option #2: Discovery

In science, are people still trying to discover the meaning of life, how to save life, and how to defeat death? What methods do they use? Are there better ways to accomplish these goals than others? Option #3: World Perception and Prejudice
Reread the paragraph where the creature describes the book from which Felix teaches Safie. It begins: “The book from which Felix instructed Safie was Volney’s Ruins of Empires…”
What are some of the perceptions and prejudices from the book that Felix teaches Safie? How have these perceptions and prejudices changed, if they have, in today’s society? What are some present-day situations and references that may claim a lack of prejudice or an open-mindedness, but, in fact, are still very prejudiced, racist, sexist, etc.? Why do you think these situations still happen? Can anything be done about it?

Option #4: Personal Perception
It could be argued that the creature did not consider itself a monster and didn’t do awful things until people treated him like a monster. What are some real-world instances in which people’s actions could be a reaction to abuse from others? Who do you feel is accountable in these situations? Why?

Option #5: Death and Suicide
At the end of the book, the creature promises to destroy himself. Is this a justifiable end for him? Could he have been redeemed? Would he have had a place in the world of Shelley’s novel? How could this relate to current-day issues like suicide or the death penalty?

For far too long, a debate: Spirituality Vs. Science has rocked the world. The people of faith believe that a supreme being is responsible for all creations in the universe. On the other hand, scientists believe that organisms came from interactions between chemical compounds and evolution. The question of what science can achieve remains a mystery. Therefore, people have dedicated their time to finding out how far science can go, which led to the emergence of science fiction. Science fiction novels, such as Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein attempt to explain what science can achieve. In the novel, Shelley supports the notion that science supersedes faith because she believes thatscientific enlightenment and genetic modifications can create Life (Frankenstein’s monster) and humanity can progress in the absence of religion,
Shelley begins exploring how man tries to undermine religion when Victor Frankenstein plays god by creatinglife out of a non-living thing. Victor recounts, life and death appeared to me in ideal bounds, which I should first breakthrough, and pour a torrent of light into our dark world. A new species would bless me as its creator and source; many happy and excellent natures would owe their being to me” (Shelley). The excerpt reveals Victor assuming the role of god by creating a living being who would treat him as a divine being. Here, the first encounter of science vs. spirituality comes to light. The people of faith believe that life comes from God, a divine being. However, Frankenstein and his genius scientific mind make a living creature out of a non-living thing.
Shelley continues to portray the superiority of science over religion when Victor abandons his creature. The abandonment of the creature leads him to learn how to live on his own, without guidance from his parent or creator (God). Instead, scientific enlightenment allowed the creature to learn how to cope through observing other creatures. Therefore, he became dependent on others for his survival and existence. Through his struggles to exist, the creature sought to understand his sense of purpose, which he first achieved through relying on his self-consciousness. Hegel describes the creatures’ search for purpose as “Lordship and Bondage,” meaning that if an individual is conscious of his surroundings, he has an awareness of self (Hegel). Hence, the creature understands his existence based on his perception of how others see and treat him. Although he later came to understand his sense of purpose when he found Victor’s writings on his creation, which compared to the creation story in the bible, he quickly resented his creator (god) and set out on a revenge path, leading him to kill Victor.
Shelley further explores the concept of life and death, in which she addresses resurrection, galvanism, and ‘incomplete’ and ‘absolute’ death. In religion, resurrection is a gift from God. Christians believe in resurrection, but only if it comes from the divine being. They, however, don’t believe in the resurrection on earth. Shelley’s Frankensteindespises that belief by allowing Victor to resurrect the creature. Since many are eager to know if they can resurrect the dead, Victor buys into that idea. He asserts, “Life and Death appeared to me ideal bounds” (Shelley). He addresses the state of incomplete and absolute death by using scientific terminologies. For instance, when he collapsed, due to a nervous illness, after creating his monster, he described himself in that situation as being ‘lifeless’ and Clerval’ restored’ him back to ‘life.’ Here, she states the role science closes the boundary between life and death; hence, telling dead and life apart is difficult.She also brings about the aspect of galvanism by believing that it is possible to galvanize the dead.
Throughout the novel, Shelley does not try to hold religion above science. From the time of Frankenstein’s monster creation, she addresses how scientific processes facilitate the emergence of the being. She portrays this creature as being moral for the major part of the article. However, the creature becomes immoral after seeing its creator’s notes, which represents the introduction of religion. This religion makes the monster adopt the lucifer role and set out to get its revenge, explaining that religion can corrupt a moral being. In the end, the creature manages to revenge by contributing to Victor’s death. He earns his freedom from ‘god’as he understandswho he is.
In conclusion, Shelley’s Frankenstein examines the theme of scientific enlightenment versus religion, which runs throughout the novelcontroversially. She does not come out openly to state her stance on religion. However, she supports the role of science in creating life and making ‘gods.’While Victor dies in the end, which some might claim to be a punishment from God for playing god, it depicts, for the creature, moral freedom. It suggests that ‘God is Dead’, which is a rebuke to religion. She also addresses life and death by supporting the claim that it is possible to resurrect the dead. She achieves this by allowing Victor to create his monster, which goes against religious beliefs, that state resurrection can only come from God.
