Ethical Implications of Information Systems
A growing number of computer information systems process and maintain value information and offer services in healthcare organizations. Information systems have been used to store information in the database, which reduces the efforts and process of finding data quickly, which improves all aspects of the health system (Iyengar, Kundu, and Pallis, 2018). For instance, healthcare information systems have facilitated patient care decision-making and simplified care delivery. Although information systems significantly impact the collection, storage, and dissemination of health and patient information, they have had several ethical implications that affect quality, such as security and reliability. Privacy of data is a significant ethical implication in healthcare information systems. Privacy of information has been linked to ethical and safety problems within healthcare information systems, such as breach of patient data and loss of confidentiality to sensitive healthcare information.
Ideally, information privacy is the link between gathering and dissemination of data as well as the public expectation of privacy and the political and legal issues surrounding them (Schaefer et al., 2017). The need to achieve information privacy has been applicable to collect health data such as administrative and medical records. The protection of private information has been a major challenge due to access by unauthorized uses, misuse of personal information, lack of access responsibility and oversight, lack of moral use of resources and data, physical damage, and disruptions of operations. For instance, cyber crimes have been aimed at information systems leading to data privacy issues, loss of sensitive information, and access by unauthorized persons. Thus, most information systems have raised questions of the integrity of existing confidentiality, privacy, and security measures.
Privacy issues have been a major problem in healthcare information systems due to poor security measures. Managing data confidentiality within information systems is an essential step for maintaining the security and confidentiality of information (Murphy, 2015). Development and dynamic enforcement of written confidentiality and privacy policies can improve the security measures such as system firewalls and encryption in healthcare information systems.
