The article exposes the existence of ethical concerns in caring for the elderly especially in matters bordering autonomy and dignity. Dignity is achieved when an individual maintains self-respect and gets valued by other people. while autonomy is the ability of an individual to control their decisions and activities. The article cites anecdotal evidence suggesting the undermining of older people’s dignity and autonomy in the health care setting. Negative interactions in the health care setting deprive the elderly of their dignity. Lack of dignity sometimes manifests in disregard for patient’s privacy and general insensitivity to the needs of elderly patients. Tackling negative attitudes by education and exposure can inform health care professionals and enable them to preserve the dignity and autonomy of elderly patients. The article also documents the importance of supplying the elderly with information regarding their health to aid them in making sound decisions.
