Effectiveness of Stuart’s argument

Effectiveness of Stuart’s argument.

Stuart in his article about social media: establishing criteria for law enforcement use, it’s clear that the speedy access to social networking sites has influenced law enforcement. The widespread presence of social media has influenced various sectors including law enforcement. Stuart begins his argument by offering the rewards and risks that law enforcement officers and the departments encounter while using social media. Ideally, social media has not only impacted law enforcement’s public image due to funny videos and images but also raised concern with the safety of officers on and off duty. Stuart (2013) focuses on combatting risks such as the safety of officers, exposure to criminal liability, and embarrassment of the law enforcement agencies. Therefore, Stuart states that law enforcement departments need to understand the different forms of social media and establish some criteria for controlling the usage of social networks by law enforcement officers.

The main points in Stuart’s argument include the application of social media, problems encountered, and the restriction of social media usage in law enforcement through policies. Social media has been part of the people in their daily routine due to immediate access through tablets and smartphones. This has increased the speed through which information is shared and received by the public. Stuart (2013) explained how social media facilitates two-way communication and a technique of reaching a wider audience. Social networking is one form of social media which enables multiple individuals to share information. According to Stuart (2013) social networking sites have created their language and public words that have specific. Therefore, law enforcement should focus on understanding social media to use it to their advantage to reduce crime and boost public relations. Relatively, people want to get what is happening and seek social media to communicate with those who know. Therefore, the law enforcement agencies need to build a presence on social networking sites to offer a new way of open communication to the public.

According to Stuart (2013), law enforcement agencies have benefited from social media through crime prevention, crime investigation, and public relations. However, law enforcement agencies have encountered problems that arise from mixing private life and duties on social media. Stuart (2013) stated that combining their professional and social lives has discredited the law enforcement departments. Therefore, law enforcers need to be aware of various things that they should consider before posting on their social media accounts. One of the things that are highly recommended for law enforcement agencies is to ensure that they separate their professional and private lives to prevent them from damaging their public image and embarrassing the law enforcement departments. For instance, Stuart (2013) notes that “police officers posting information to the public about how they are tired and sleepy can lead to questioning their fitness for their duties in the event of a deadly force or serious road accident”. This is because information about the law enforcers draws more attention on social media. On the other hand, law enforcement officers have shared information on social media which criminals rely on to commit crimes.

Considerably, law enforcement officers cannot refrain themselves from social media. Therefore, as stated by Stuart (2013), law enforcement agencies have to establish some criteria on how they will utilize social media as well as balance their integrity and constitutional rights in their departments. Policies regarding the use of social media will be essential in protecting the integrity of law enforcement agencies. Stuart (2013) pointed out that the ICJE survey in 2011 found that 40 percent of the agencies have guidelines on social media while below 15 percent offered training to the officers on what is suitable to post. The results add on the need to establish and implement an inclusive agency policy to broadly address the use of social media policy. According to Stuart (2013), the findings also show a sign of progress towards the application of a social media policy. The establishment of measures for social media usage will focus on protecting evidence obtained by officers and the freedom of speech. The policy should also be comprehensive to address the current and future issues linked to social media.

Additionally, Stuart (2013) states that government entities have the capacity of restricting their employees under various circumstances. Therefore, law enforcement agencies have the authority to control the law enforcers on social media through policies that restrict their activities. However, Stuart (2013) adds that social media policies should clearly describe the protection of free expression which may impact the law enforcement officers. Administrators should also decide on information and conducts to regulate as well as address how officers should use social media.

Ideally, training law enforcement officers on how to use social media will reduce embarrassments in the department and ensure that the officers are aware of actions that increase or decrease conflicts in social media. The law enforcement officers should establish effective controls through policies to reduce incidents of misuse by the officers. Stuart’s argument on effective social media policies is valuable since the officers are guided on what to share and when. This will boost positive public relations and image for the law enforcement agencies.

In summation, Stuart’s argument on the development of policies for social media use will ensure stability and maintain the legal rights of officers while using online resources. Stuart considers that it is significant for law enforcement officers to control social media use by law enforcement officers to aid better management of law enforcement agencies. Guiding and training on social media use will also facilitate the application of social media for crime prevention, public relations, and crime investigation.
