Career Development
Introduction
My motivation and inspiration have always been to work in the law enforcement domain. I started my career as a lawyer in Egypt, where I had the opportunity to fulfill one of my childhood dreams. I later ventured into the correctional domain, where I currently work as an officer at the state prison. My long-term dream is to become a state police officer and an FBI agent in the long run after pursing my master’s program. My best decision remains to continue my education to achieve my career goals. Also, I have invested in building my interests and hobbies. Overall, as I currently major in IS criminal justice, I look forward to becoming a state police officer and an FBI agent.
Life Events
The two life events that have shaped my career development are being a lawyer and a correction officer at the state prison. Growing up, I always aspired and dreamt of being one of the reputable lawyers. I had the opportunity to work as a lawyer back at home in Egypt. This gave me the satisfaction of offering appropriate help to the needy. I have always felt that my calling is to help those in dire need of assistance. I focus my career on being a viable change agent in the community. Thus, practicing law for a few years in Egypt accelerated my career growth. Another event that has shaped my career is becoming a correction officer at the state prison. I have actively played the role of enforcing order in prison, supervising and inspecting facilities to ensure they meet the right standards. These are duties that I always handle and fulfill as expected. I always cultivate a positive attitude to avoid exposure to stressors. As Misis et al. (2013) reveal, job-related stressors affect correctional officers’ attitudes towards their work. When these professionals cultivate the right mindset towards their work, they fulfill their duties successfully. I believe that I have sharpened valuable skills that positively impact people’s lives. Thus, being a lawyer and a correctional officer at the state prison are critical life events that have defined my career growth and development.
Childhood Career Aspirations
As I was growing up, I took an interest in the legal profession. I wanted to become a lawyer so that I can deliver justice to the needy. I believed that justice did not exist after witnessing how people failed to obtain justice due to different barriers. The lack of confidence in the justice delivery system is common across various communities (Dubin & Lawson, 2016). It denies individuals the chance to live a fruitful life as they always struggle with the thoughts of the challenges they encountered. I fulfilled my childhood passion and aspiration when I got the opportunity to practice being a lawyer in Egypt. This was one of my best moments, and I believe that it played a crucial role in boosting my career growth. It opened my eyes to other opportunities that I can undertake and change communities for the better.
Important Decisions
The primary and best decision that I have made is to further my education. After arriving in the United States, I made up my mind to continue furthering my education. After realizing that education shapes one’s cognitive ability, I decided to focus my time and efforts on undertaking more learning opportunities. As research shows that education impacts cognitive ability, I realized that I would only acquire advanced skills and knowledge when I pursued further studies (Hatch et al., 2007). I believe that I will earn significant milestones and objectives in my career when I boost my education. Another critical decision that I made is always being on the right side. I made up my mind to never protect evil because this could have a serious implication on an innocent person. Thus, I made up my mind to always stand with the truth because it will make me free.
Current Major
I am currently majoring in IS criminal justice, where my primary focus is to ensure justice prevails to those who have engaged in crime. I will earn a chance to work as a lead agent in the police department, the prosecution, courts, and the prison department. I feel that this major will lead me to the best and optimal point of my career. It will enable me to earn a place in one of the leadership positions. For example, my dream job is to become a state police officer and then an FBI agent after achieving my master’s. I believe that undertaking this major brings me close to these professions.
Interests and Hobbies
During my free time, I participate in sports and recreation activities. This gives me valuable opportunities to interact and associate with community members. For example, during these events, If can encounter someone in dire need of legal services. I can link them up with different professionals in the industry because I always remain driven by the urge to help those in need. I also value reading and watching informative movies that deepen my understanding of the correctional field and other departments in the legal system. Notably, I spend my leisure on traveling, engaging in gaming activities and sports. These give me the satisfaction to build my personal life. For example, when participating in games and sports, I develop a quality mental status that boosts my productivity in the workplace. As Azevedo (2013) notes, hobbies offer an excellent opportunity to cultivate interest-related phenomenon and processes.
Standing Out
My love and enthusiasm to help people is an aspect that makes me stand out among other ASU college students in the future. I am always ready and willing to help a person in need because I am driven by the desire to make the world a better place. Passion makes me focus on changing lives. It exists as a solid inclination for making people’s lives better (Vallerand & Verner-Filion, 2013). Thus, passion is one of the elements that make me stand out among other students in college.
Conclusion
I have spent my time and effort developing my career path. I commenced when I ventured into the legal profession in Egypt and later moved into the United States, where I decided to pursue my education. Today, I work as a correction officer at the state prison and always aspiring to become a state police officer and an FBI agent. I intend to continue furthering my education, passion, hobbies, and interests to become a reputable professional in this industry. Overall, when I advance my studies and passion, I will achieve high career levels.
