Family Intervention

Systems theory enables professionals to look at a client’s condition and environment and helps them understand why they are facing the hardships. Systems theory is the study of systems as they relate to each other in a larger complex system. The family system focuses on how exchanges of behavior within the family affect the behavior of a family member and perpetuate both problematic and non-problematic factors. This model helps one understand that family intervention is a good way to tackle problems, especially among young people, as their interactions with the family shape their behavior. The fact that different factors affect the perspective of different people affects how one works with the family in that one can focus on family interventions, but also they can focus on ensuring that they get the perspective of each family member before trying to bring in a solution.

Focusing on the family’s strength builds resilience within the family and helps solve the problems. Focusing on their strengths shows them that they can work out any issues they might be facing and that they are strong despite the crises they might be facing. It shows them there is hope in their family and prevents them from losing the hope that their family will be whole. Acknowledging their vulnerabilities and weaknesses enables them to focus on their weak areas and focus on making them better to ensure the family stays together. It also removes the perfectionist mentality from the family unit and allows them to allow the embers of the family to make mistakes and work them out. There are no perfect families. Those who work hard to stay together will be resilient in all seasons despite their challenges.
