Identify a family you know well. Do not provide the name of the family or any other identifiers regarding your relationship. Discuss interventions for primary, secondary and tertiary prevention that are appropriate for the family identified. Then choose an appropriate theory discussed this week that would be most effective for a family nurse to integrate into meeting the health care needs of that family and explain.
ANSWER
Family Prevention Interventions and Theory
I know of a family that does not believe in vaccines. They believe that vaccines are harmful to their biddies and that their bodies can produce antibodies that can protect them from any disease. They only visit the hospital when it is absolutely necessary, and thus they do not have regular check-ups. During the pandemic, they believed the coronavirus was another firm of flu and prevented themselves, resulting in herbal medicines. They used ginger, lemons and honey as a preventative alternative to the virus. However, the family has an elderly member who got sick. The family did not visit the healthcare centre until it was absolutely necessary. Fortunately, the member of their family survived the virus after spending days in the ICU. They used a lot of money in the hospital due to not having insurance cover for their elderly relative.
Primary prevention involves the prevention of a disease before it happens. This family does not believe in hospitals, and thus primary prevention could work (Kisling & Das, 2020). The family could be guided to watch the food they eat, protecting themselves from harmful situations by wearing a seat belt and wearing a helmet. The theory that is applicable in this family is the health belief model. A nurse working with this family can use their beliefs to help them find the best intervention for their care. The health belief model can be integrated into the family’s care by understanding their beliefs (Baumann & Ylinen, 2020). The nurse can seek to understand why the family does not have insurance or does not do regular hospital check-ups. After finding out their reasons, the nurse could help guide them towards preventative care.
