Legalism is the central ordeal of the movie. Frollo is the tyrant who grips and squeezes the juice of Paris. Frollo is driven by the insanity to dispel his lust and is willing to burn down the entire city to do so. In doing so, others in Paris suffer. His hate for the gypsies led to them trying to hide and escape the legalism Frollo sets upon Paris. He is keen to terminate the gypsies who are citizens. It was an interesting theme which the group we were discussing with compared to the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector.  The tax collectors were seen as thieves and outcasts in society. In similarity, Frollo scowls upon the Gypsies as thieves who are sinful and despicable. The Tax Collector asks for nothing important and does not wish to strike the Pharisee in a hateful manner. When Esmeralda says, “I ask for nothing I can get by, but I know so many less lucky than I.” Unlike the Pharisee of whom does not acknowledge to help those who were “less lucky” than him like the Tax Collector.

Like the Tax Collector, Esmeralda does not ask for much but to clear the name of the outcasts. She then goes on to say, “Please help my people, the poor and downtrod,” – meaning she does want nothing more than to help her fellow outcast Gypsies. Finally, she says, “I thought we all were the children of God,” – meaning that the Pharisee is no more important than the Tax Collector and to belittle the other is not morally right. As the Tax Collector, the Gypsies are also in unity with the others as equal instead of the demeanor set upon them under Frollo. Through this dong, Esmeralda teaches us just this – we are all the children of God no matter our differences, and we should all treat each other so as brother and sister. She teaches us that no matter what you believe in or how close your background is attached to religion; God will always hear his children in need and will help those who deserve it.
