Aunt Georgina attending the concert in, ‘A Wagner Matinee’ was not a positive experience. Aunt Georgina had been taken to the concert by her nephew, Clark who was not sure if he had made the right decision by taking her but ended giving her a taste of unreality. During the concert, when the orchestra starts to play, ‘silence of thirty years ‘aunt Georgina felt her previous existence and she remembered her old lifestyle before she eloped from her city to Nebraska after marrying a farmer and abandoning her love for music and she probably wished she would go back to her city and enjoy her music. Moreover, during the concert, aunt Georgina remained immobile as the music played and when Clark looked at her, he noticed her cheeks were wet from tears and as the music went on aunt Georgina kept weeping and trembling. This concert reminded aunt Georgina of what she had sacrificed for love and it reawakened her musical spirit to its terrible loss. Aunt Georgina shows regret for choosing love when she refuses to leave the concert and pretends to play. Aunt Georgina tells Clark she does not wish to return to the life of corns, snakes and dairy creatures but the reality is that she may not be able to go back to her old life because she chose Nebraska.
Richard Wright and Zora Hurston were so similar and different in various ways. They were both in involved in various circumstances and they dealt with the circumstances in differently. Both Richard and Zora were Africa American and grew up in the South. However, Richard was born in Mississippi on a plantation near Natchez .He later moved to Memphis where he learned the value of Money and the influence of race on personal opinion while Zora grew up in Eatonville where she learned how to treat people equally. She later moved to New York where she now became the first American to be admitted in Barnard College. When Richard was 19 years old he wrote his story ,’The Library Card’ which talks about how he took a chance to increase his knowledge while Zora wrote ,’How it feels to be colored me ,’at 13 years talking about the joy and the African American lifestyle. In the journey of developing, Zora had an easier time because she received support from her community while Richard had tougher situations due to extreme prejudices and he was endowed with trust issues.
A worn path story by Eudora Welty which shows love, honour, pity, pride, compassion and sacrifice. This story is about an old African American woman, Phoenix Jackson, who ventures towards a town looking for medication for her grandson who swallowed a lye damaging his throat which now never fully heals and from time to time it swells and shut. The theme of this story is the unconditional love grandma Phoenix has for his grandson. On her journey to town, she meets the white hunter, who is quite arrogant and questions Phoenix about her and even makes an assumption that black people would never miss an opportunity to see Santa Claus however Phoenix does not correct .Phoenix Jackson encounters difficulties on this journey including her old agama worn path and poverty but this does not stop her from getting the medication her grandson needs. This symbolises her compassion, strength and selflessness. At the end Phoenix is so proud of her journey and you can see what she says, ‘This is what I came to’, and lifting her ‘free hands’ and walks out of the office. This shows how proud she is and she has a lot of honour and a good heart.
