For this Gun violence Paper, Staying informed about he world around us is essential for being able to make decisions about practical real world issues. For this assignment you must complete a current event submission. A current event is defined as any news or research that has been thrust into the spot light during the active semester. The current event must be related to criminal justice: Law Enforcement, Courts, and/or corrections. To complete the assignment you must properly format your submission. Link to your submission the original news article, research, or topic. (insert an active link to include when you accessed it). You will summarize your article. Written proof of your comprehension of your topic. You will relate it to the area of our textbook. Include the chapter page section and topic area. This means understanding our authors perspective on the topic. (due to the fluid nature of topics you may be exploring parts of our text out of sequence from the class) Finally you will include your opinion. Essential to your opinion is a perspective on what you think about your topic choose. Do you see agreement or divergent positions between our Author and your topic in application. Attached is a sample document with the grading scale and a format that can be typed over.
Current Event
According to an article by Benson (2022), there has been a rise in violent and non-violent crime in New York. According to the article, Rev Sharpton who is a longtime civil rights and criminal justice reform activist who has been critical in spearheading the police reforms in the city; there has been a high rate of nonviolent and violent crimes in New York and he noted that the new mayor is facing the challenge of mitigating crime and also supporting the policing reforms. The current policing reforms are a result of the increased racial profiling which led to US citizens calling out the government and defunding the police department (Benson, 2022). According to Sharpton, there is an ongoing debate on the criminal justice system as people are concerned with overloading jails with petty crime. However, people cannot be allowed to go around robbing and committing crimes. There needs to be some balance between the police department and the people and they need to agree on how they are going to co-exist.
According to the article, the mayor and president Biden agreed that defunding the police is not the solution. The police need to be trained to be protectors. I agree with this because taking the police out of the streets does not make the streets safer (Benson, 2022). People need to be protected against malicious people who want to commit crimes. It is understandable why people were outraged with the actions of the police and why they wanted them out of their streets in the first place, but it is important to also understand that with sufficient training the police can learn how to deescalate situations and this could help with making the streets safer.
