Ego Identity Vs. Despair
According to Erickson’s theory of psychosocial development, ego identity vs. despair is the last stage in one’s life. This is the part where one is either content with the life they have led or has regrets because they are not happy with how they lived in their life. Ego Identity vs. despair can be compared to Piaget’s 4th stage of development formal operational stage (Lally &Valentine-French, 2019). The formal operational stage is the last stage in the Piagetian stages. It starts from 11 years and beyond; after this age, an individual can operate individually. They understand the logic, and they understand their actions have consequences. This stage can be associated with ego identity vs. despair as one gets to resonate with the choices they made after they got to the formal operational stage. One can either be filled with regret, or they are satisfied with their choices after they understand life’s dynamics. There is a correlation between these two theories as one talks about the consequences in one’s life, and the other describes the cognitive development of a human being.
