Emily Stewart laments over how capitalism in America is exploited by big companies in America engaging in monopoly. She narrates over the agonizing airline Trip she had with United Airlines after losing her luggage only to receive it at the end of her trip. Stewart laments over how crappy the services of big airlines like Delta, American, United, and Southwest (referred to as the ‘big four airlines’) are and how often they increase their fees without blinking. But the problem does not involve the airline industry, as she says, but also every major company in America. Monopoly is evident in almost every sector, including the banking, health, Tech, and Agricultural sectors, among others. This monopoly is exercised due to significant companies combining to control the market, and even if one opts to switch to a better service provider, it is impossible due to the conditions created by them. However, Stewart narrates that there is hope, finally, after President Biden signed a bill calling for increase competition in America. This will allow medium-sized companies to compete at the highest level in rendering their services and be economically friendly to consumers in the long haul.

This article is relevant to my level of reading in political science. As a course, I understand how politics, economics, and other factors affect America. In this regard, the article enlightens me on how both the political and economic America influence people’s lives. The vocabularies used are like monopoly, corporate America, executive orders, among others, are of my level of understanding.

In my opinion, monopoly kills capitalism, and Stewart is right to advocate for fair competition in the American economic system. I believe monopoly hinders people from getting the services they are paying for and prevents people from raising their voices. In a democratic voice like America, everyone is supposed to air their concerns, and an issue like a monopoly in this country should be addressed in every way possible.
