The Kickapoo People

The tribe’s social, cultural, political, and economic systems

The Kickapoo people are an Algonquian-speaking Native American and Indigenous Mexican tribe who originated from the region south of the Great Lakes. They traditionally practiced a pattern of subsistence farming, which combined hunting and gathering adaptation, with a few of them favoring to focus on horticultural activity. Some of the significant sources of meat for the tribe included deer and bison, but other game animals were also part of their meals. Kickapoos were involved in the fur trade and later dealt with other goods as well, and as a result, got commonly referred to as shrewd traders.[1] Politically, the Kickapoo has a tribal council, which is the official governing body for the tribe. They have a Kickapoo constitution that highlights the roles of the leaders.

The tribe’s relationships with other tribes

The Kickapoo were allied with the French in the Violent Beaver was in 1640 to 1701. They also were great friends with the French during the French and Indian Wars. Nevertheless, the Kickapoos were enemies with tribes of the powerful Iroquois Confederacy, who forced them to migrate further to the South and the West.

The connection between the tribe’s way of life and its geographic region

There is a major connection between the Kickapoo community with its geographic region. The tribe was primarily nomadic and hence could not be assigned to a specific location. They mainly ranged from the Southern Great Lakes Region and were eventually pushed to the West and South.[2] They currently live around Horton, Kansas, McCloud in Oklahoma, and Melchor Muzquiz, Coahuila, Mexico. Most of the remaining members of the community have dual residency in Texas and continue with their migratory lifestyle, which has seen them move throughout Utah, Colorado, Montana, and North Dakota. They are mainly involved in agricultural works.
