THE TRAIL OF TEARS

The Trail of Tears

This article recounts the story of a young boy who survived the trail of tears, in other words, the Indian removal. The Indian removal was planned was conducted on land and water roots. Notably, two groups were positioned along the Tennessee River; one was at Ross’s Landing, which is in modern-day Chattanooga, Tennessee. Another was at Gunter’s Landing, which today is known as Guntersville, Alabama. The third group travelled to the Cherokee Agency on the Hiwassee River in Calhoun, Tennessee. Ideally, the groups travelled an average of about 1,200 miles.[1]

During the trial of tears, the Cherokees experienced some very harsh conditions as well as hardships as they were exposed to heat and sicknesses. Also, in the concentration camps where they were held awaiting their movement, the camps were barely more than enclosed pens, with minimal protection from the elements and no basic sanitation facilities.[2]. The difficulties created by these living arrangements were exacerbated by the fact that the roundups were carried out as surprise operations, separating husbands from wives and parents from children, leaving some Cherokees with nothing but the clothes on their backs and others with only what they could carry.

On the other hand, the Cherokees feel that their removal from their land changed the matrix of their society.[3]. In addition, their religion, their way of life are linked with their ancestral mountains and streams. This continues to affect them tupto now as their removal from their land disconnected them from their traditional heritage and strengths. Again, this has led to the loss of ancestry as the families were separated during the roundups; hence, most of them are unaware of their origin.
