As we enter the final weeks of the course, we will be focusing on solutions to social welfare challenges in the U.S. How do we implement evidence-informed and evidence-based interventions to combat poverty, racism, sexism, and bias? How can we increase access to services including health and mental healthcare, education, housing and job opportunities? Do we consider the intersection of environmental degradation and social welfare policy? What role do we play in creating a better society?

For this final discussion, in addition to watching the assigned videos, research and become more deeply knowledgeable about a topic of Social Welfare that is of particular interest to you, but one that also ties into the videos. Please remember that your textbook is only one source of information – there are fountains of credible and scholarly information that you should explore and become familiar with to help you critically analyze information and form an opinion that you can defend about social welfare topics. Reading multiple sources from the Internet, library holdings, outside expert interviews and articles will provide you with different perspectives so that you can form your own voice.

Economic Security Programs in Social Welfare

Trisi and Saenz (2021) state a country’s success depends on all individuals regardless of ethnicity or race. Social welfare systems have significantly assisted families through housing assistance, unemployment compensation, food stamps, and child care assistance. These economic security programs offer an opportunity for solving economic hardship or short-term poverty.

After watching the four horsemen documentary, it’s clear that the current system is corrupt and messed up. The current system is a significant reason for the social welfare challenges in the United States (Four Horsemen (2012). The system makes the rich richer and the poor even poorer. Liberalization and deregulation have been presented in the documentary as solutions to the social welfare challenges within the current U.S system. Michael Green (2015) offers social progress as a solution to end poverty and hunger and achieve gender equality before 2030. The video by Personal Finance Insider (2018) shows the impact investing as a solution. This is an investment approach that centers on generating beneficial environmental and social impacts in addition to financial benefits. The economic security program focuses on protection, equity, benefit, and labor, which are emphasized in the solutions in the three videos to address the issue of inequality, racism, and poverty.

The reason for choosing the topic of economic security programs is because there is a need for a multifaceted integrated approach required to address the social welfare challenges within the United States. The most surprising thing is that ongoing and historical discrimination reflected in discriminatory practices and policies have limited the opportunities to reduce poverty, racism, and inequality. Trisi and Saenz (2021) state that the economic security programs have successfully reduced racial disparities and poverties over the last few years. Studies show that racial poverty and inequality would be much complex were it not for the economic security programs.

The U.S’s well-being and economic stability can be made stronger and better through promoting including and social protection, which will rapidly change the social welfare challenges. Economic security is the main factor in promoting well-being. Therefore, effective economic security programs will promote the economic stability and well-being of the United States.
